All you cybercriminals better watch out, the Army is coming for you!

The Army’s academy has established a cyber warfare research institute to groom elite cyber troops and solve thorny problems for the Army and the nation in this new warfighting domain. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., plans to build a cyber brain trust unprecedented within the service academies, filling 75 positions over the next three years — including scholars in technology, psychology, history and law, among other fields.

Not really, they are developing the methodology and doctrine for conducting warfare in cyberspace, not law enforcement of cyber-criminals. There is a big difference between hunting down a script-kiddie and launching a full fledged attack on another country's government, infrastructure, and military via the internet and other vulnerable networks. But that's just the short description.

It's about time they started moving these classes into the Academies. They already have classes and training going on outside the academies. Been doing it for years. But mostly they are taught how to use the tools created by contractors, who then aren't allowed to push the shiny red button, because they are not military... So mostly the training consists of, "push this red button, watch what happens". Obviously there is a bit more to it than that, but that is pretty close.

Back on topic, this is actually a good thing ... the USA has been lagging in the cyber warfare arms race behind Russia and China ... it is highly likely that our next global conflict will be preceded by cyber attacks to disable or confuse the opponent ... we need effective offensive capabilities to use against potential enemies and more effective defenses to protect our own resources ... cyber warfare is definitely the new nuclear arms race ;)

Just a question, but what makes you say the US has been lagging behind Russia and China?

Maybe it is just perception ... although we had the successful Stuxnet attack on Iran, we have been attacked multiple times by both China and Russia in Cyberspace and there didn't seem to be an adequate response from the USA ... but maybe we are so good that no one knows how good we are ... either way, the USA is the worlds dominant military and economic Super Power still and we need to have a dominant Cyber Warfare capability to protect our Super Power status (just as we needed nuclear weapons in the 60s to 90s) ;)

I would hazard a guess that news of China and Russia hacking US companies/government garners more news here than US hacking of Chinese/Russian governments. Although I will say that our rule of law is a hell of a lot stronger, so it likely isn't as much of a "Wild West" environment.

In Cybercrime, if you hear about something, then its been caught... A lot of the Russian and Chinese attacks are just reversed attacks back at the US or from other places. Chinese seem to be more inventive though and have a far larger cyberwarfare department than Russia. But the US still has the edge. The reason for the upsurge in training is in direct response to the growing investment by China in cyberwarfare, especially with their more lax regulations and growing economic power.
