I can only imagine how this meeting went. They act like they had to ask the police to investigate them.

In a newly-posted document on the Mt. Gox Web site, CEO Mark Karpeles revealed that the company has "consulted with the metropolitan police department with regard to the disappearance of bitcoins." Mt. Gox has submitted all the necessary documents related to the matter, Karpeles said, adding that the company intends to cooperate with the authorities.

MtGox: We got robbed
MPD: what did they take?
MtGox: they took our money
MPD: How much did they take?
MtGOX: all of it. Some 850,000
MPD: Dollars?
MtGOX: No, Bitcoins
MPD: Bit-what
MtGOX: Bitcoins. It's a virtual currency
MPD: So it's not real?
MtGox: well, no, it's electronic
MPD: So it's in a bank?

Something like that

Don't know how it is in Japan, but hard enough for local police to care about regular financial crime, much less virtual currency.

My co: "Hey, we've tracked down the name, address and DL numbers of 4 people in a fraud ring in your area. They've stolen over $100k so far from about 20 people."
LocalPD: "Leave a message. <click>"

Imaginary money stolen? Who you gonna call?

And it's in Japan...and those people are weirdos. So the continued conversation went something like...

MPD: Did you look in your butt?
MtGox: What? No! Why...
MPD: Can we look in your butt?
MtGox: Dafuq? No!
MPD: So sorry, we have a warrant. We're gonna look in your butt.
