TV ads that can target specific individuals? I think we'd better take a look at those NSA patents again, this is right up their alley! :D

And, in some places, they can reach those individuals directly through their televisions. Welcome to Addressable TV, an emerging technology that allows advertisers — Senate hopefuls and insurance companies alike — to pay some broadcasters to pinpoint specific homes.

"But earlier this year, DirecTV and Dish Network announced a partnership that would allow political clients to reach into about 20 million households by matching up customers’ identities with their satellite receiver, much like a telephone number rings at a specific handset."

We need better consumer privacy laws to protect us from these sorts of sleazy business practices.

so with all this money Senators will save with targeted ads, they won't need to take in as much from lobbyists, right?

I kid I kid

This really is not going to be any more significant than how websites target you with specific ads. Of course I do not watch TV shows these days so it will not affect me. When the TV is on, it is being used by my Xbox or BDP with Netflix.

I would rather have a ad targeted to me rather than some of the stupid shit I see.

OTA users are unaffected. :D

Pirates. Still not affected

Why ever would I watch television, where a 30 minute show contains 8 minutes of advertisement when I can simply wait for Netflix and watch it undisturbed and save that 8 minutes each show for myself? Most recently, I was able to watch the entire series of Voyager that way and found it far more enjoyable to schedule it on my own and to be able to watch episodes in order and back to back if I was so inclined. Not to mention an hour show became 40 minutes without ads or credits.

Advertisements? Oh yeah, those segments that get marked in my HTPC that I skip over.

Next.

Targeted Ads?

Why don't they try targeted TV shows?

I'm so tired of paying for 120+ channels and there never being anything worth watch except a few old reruns. Price keeps going up, and they keep adding more channels with nothing but garbage.
I'd dump cable if it wasn't for the couple channels the wife/kids watch. I'm waiting for the day when I can just choose few channels I want and just stream the few shows we watch.

Well, targeted ads should be much more effective at generating revenue so we should be seeing less ads overall if this technology comes through, right? :p

Maybe the ads i get will have tits, like all of my online ads seem to have.

My wife is going to be mad about all the new porn adverts showing up. OMG! Just started looking into getting rid of cable and using my home media center to stream stuff, Can I do this to multiple TV's? time to research this any good links? Suggestions.

And then we get bank accounts that automatically buy us the stuff we want automatically without user "interference" according to the psychological profiling and buying habits. Welcome to the future! ;)

The amount of leverage given to advertisers is amazing. They become more intrusive as time goes on, but nobody seems to care as long as they keep handing out that advertising revenue

Forgot to mention, I almost bought an LG smart tv until i read about their targeted ads. If the corporations of the world keep fucking around the people will wake up one day and screw them.

lol in Canada all our American commercials are cut off and the Cable provider plays their own over top, at least with Rogers

Explain to me how exactly hundreds of millions of willingly ignorant people are going to "wake up" and do anything that requires self-motivation and goes against the approval of the community?

i predicted this months and months ago.

i noticed a trend in the homes i visit, the ones with the small comcast cable box here in my city..
certain individuals would recieve the same type of commercials over and over again that were never in the next persons home.

one guy, a vet kept getting ads of va/donation/army type commercials.. on any channel!
one guy with a wife that spends money in certain stores alot, would get ads constantly from that store
my gf who shops online at a shoe store, started getting ads from the online shop, of which i never thought they'd have one. really creepy. everything we buy the information is collected, stored, and organized for future use against us. to make decisions for us, or those of us who are weak minded.

ad targeting has been around for a decade on the internet, so why not on tv? its been long overdue, but its here. and its not right.

These are the same stupid people that put terrorist obama back into the throne, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for people to wake up. Our population is 5/8 sheople now and they love being told what to do and how to live as they have no thought processing power of their own. Education is the answer and USA is what 26th now in the world.

aaaaaaaand that's why I don't have cable. Stupid companies still clinging to that old business model, that is going to die very soon.

The next generation is not going to put up with this horseshit. We took a small vacation and my 4 year old son was complaining that we couldn't just turn on a show he wanted, because it wasn't playing. And was already annoyed at the commercials. Cable is a joke with the streaming options out now, and the kids growing up with it will laugh at what cable tries to offer them. "You want 20 channels? Here we'll give them to you with 200 other ones you will never watch, but still pay for. Plus we decide what you get to see and when, all while we try and cram as many advertisements as possible without pissing you off. Plus we'll charge you a shit ton of money for the privilege...." Yea cable companies can go F themselves.

You're deeply mistaken. The internet is shaping up to be TV2.0. I give it 10 years before it's completely broken down to tiers.

That "next generation" you so proudly speak of has already ruined the gaming. Stupid people will buy anything, man. We're doomed. :(

That's an issues with content providers also being ISPs and trying to squash competition. That's a whole other issues that needs to be reviewed and regulated before we are all fucked. But until they break down these giant corporate monopolies to provide some competition, nothing is going to change.

I doubt mine or other 4 year olds have ruined gaming.... This goes back to giant companies trying to squeeze every last dollar that they can, so they just keep releasing re-skinned shit games with DLC, and cut costs on things like development/QA. Yes stupid people keep buying it, but that affects more than just gaming.

Nice irrelevant rant. I bet you've got all the answers.

Makes me think of that Tom Cruise movie, Minority Report. The auto Eye-scanners in the store scan and then start talking directly to him... but he had his eyeballs swapped out so "The Gap" store says: Hello Mr Yakamoto! Welcome back to The Gap!

Giant companies won't be offering their reheated garbage for long if people don't react positively and buy it.

It doesn't matter if they do offer it and stupid people buy it. If it's garbage, don't buy it and don't worry about it.
