It's nice to see a Pope say something nice about the internet.

The Internet is a "gift from God" that facilitates communication, Pope Francis said in a statement released Thursday, but he warns that the obsessive desire to stay connected can actually isolate people from their friends and family.

So the Internet is a gift from God but Social Media is a tool of the Devil :D

Perhaps the Pope has not seen websites dedicated to Anime Tentacle Porn?

Now lets see the polarization factor of people who take what he said as meaning literally from God vs. figuratively.

Actually, Tim Berners Lee saw a burning bush on Mt Sinai that told him to lead his people to the promised land (aka "the Internet") ... there was something about commandments too from the ultimate SuperUser:

1. Thou shalt have no other Home Page before me
2. Do not make graven internet sites
3. Thou shalt not steal copyrighted materials
4. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors ISP
5. Thou shalt honor Pi Day
6. Thou shalt honor your parent processes
7. Thou shalt not Kill any processes

and a few more I forget :p

The Pope loses several points from me for putting Al Gore on that kind of pedestal.

"This is something truly good, a gift from God," he wrote. But he warned: "The desire for digital connectivity can have the effect of isolating us from our neighbors, from those closest to us."

I can totally agree with that.

So much for the fundamentalist thought process of the Internet being akin to a modern day Tower of Babel

LOL @ people who expect THE POPE to say anything different. I'm sure you guys will change his mind.

That invisible man in the sky is always taking credit for someone else's hard work.

please do explain how the word of /root (with the current alias of "teh god") is supposed to be understood figuratively. i mean, an omnipotent and omniscient being should be able to write down shit in a way that doesn't have hundreds of ways of interpretation. maybe it's just so that ancient goat herders were really bad at writing down fiction.

Maybe you should look at the message of what the Pope is saying instead of throwing up your hands in frustration because someone has different beliefs than you do.

The Pope is saying the internet is good.

Meanwhile, back in reality, the Internet is the US taxpayer's gift to the world. No one can really argue otherwise.

When it's not hated by the church, it's a gift from god, when it is contrary to religious beliefs it's sin.

ok. So convenient for them to put labels on everything

Since when are man-made things an act of god? What about oil spills killing the environment? What about the coal, that goes into producing electricity to make the cars that people roll around in? Are those gifts or punishments from God?

It's sad how quickly bigots pop out of the woodwork to proclaim their superiority and assure their solidarity whenever God is mentioned.

I am reasonably certain that any organized religion requires bigotry of its members and actively promotes bigotry among its members, so that high horse of yours ..., more like a pony really.
