A heads up from the Wall Street Journal is letting prospective email recipients of mail from Apple know the offer is legit. At first glance the email appears to be just random spam, but actually is a real offer for a $40 check and discounts on AT&T data plans. Sometimes email is just email. ;)

As part of the settlement, eligible consumers receive a $40 check and a $20 discount on AT&T’s 5 gigabyte-per-month data plan, which currently goes for $50 per month. The offer is only available to people who purchased or ordered the iPad before or on June 7, 2010.

and now the scammers have a new set of marks.

Because they'll go "oh that email was real, read it in the newspaper"

Click, infected, welcome to the Internet

I was thinking the same thing.

Can't wait to get my $40 check, considering I've never purchased an Apple product
