I guess this is a great idea if the internet didn't extend beyond the borders of California. You and I both know that once it is on the internet, it is there forever.

“This is a groundbreaking protection for our kids who often act impetuously with postings of ill-advised pictures or messages before they think through the consequences. They deserve the right to remove this material that could haunt them for years to come,” said Steinberg (D-Sacramento). “At the same time, this bill will help keep minors from being bombarded with advertisements for harmful products that are illegal for them to use, like alcohol, tobacco and guns. I thank Governor Brown for recognizing that these common sense protections will help our children as they navigate the on-line world.”

Thank you Governor Brown for wasting my state's already strained resources on this trivial endeavor. Pray tell, how could the state possibly enforce this?

It's OK children of the future, you're not responsible for the stupid shit you decide to post online. Because in life you will always be given a mulligan.

WTF ever happened to accountability?

*cough* bra pics *cough*

Although the advertising restriction portion of the law makes sense and is a good idea, the eraser option is a complete cluster ... as Steve noted, the internet is big (obligatory Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference here :) ) and it would be impossible to get stuff completely purged unless you undid it the moment you posted it ... also, if this is such a good idea because "this material could haunt them for years to come", what makes an 18 year old more applicable than a 19 year old ... I guess since laws of this nature are unenforceable it doesn't matter that their good intentions have resulted in a bad law ;)

Ah, yes. There's those two favorite liberal words again. "common sense".

There should also be a "Kill-Yourself" button right next to it with a very similar icon.

Which is never actually put into practice by those who use it when describing their latest idea or policy, especially by liberal politicians.

Let's be honest here, this just gives the trial lawyers even more opportunities to sue on behalf of their "emotionally distraught" clients to make even more money.

Micromanaging from the government, this we need less of

Kids need to learn responsibility and consequences

Yet people still vote in politicians that do this shit, or don't raise their voices against their appointed representatives.

Less laws, less regulations. But as soon as you're against a law you're twisted as some conservative wacko who is opposed to someone's "right" or restrict their god-given "freedoms".

Won't someone PLEASE think of the children?!?

Also, might not hurt to spend some of that money on common sense things like potholes and the like, but that's just me.

Eraser button for the dumb decisions of teens in california? Sorry but that technically includes like 95% of the worlds porn.

No can do.

As long as the voters here keep electing people similar to those currently in the legislature and the governor's office we can only expect more laws like this one.

Couldn't agree more. I don't understand why so many adults these days think the way to protect our children is to keep them in the dark forever. That is neither possible nor a good idea.

Is there a decent choice of people to vote for?

Libertarians. And don't give me the BS about wanting to vote only D/R because that's the only way your vote will count... If you vote D or R, you're throwing your vote away, regardless of who wins.

Failing that, always voting against the incumbent is a MUCH better option than voting for the incumbent, because making sure our government jobs are volatile means politicians have fewer opportunities to make a career out of their job and corrupt their office.

Ok, NOW the governor of CA is officially stupid.

He was officially stupid when he was governor the first time back in the 70's. They didn't call him Moonbeam for nothing. This is a no-brainer populist piece of unenforceable legislation. He gets the photo ops, makes him look like a protector of those who can't protect themselves. Up next is the California State Assembly and Senate outlawing and banning AR-15's.

:) I dont live in CA but there is hardly anybody worth voting for in the UK.
The 'left' (Labour) got us in a terrible mess and have nobody worth voting for.
The right (Conservative) go to extremes quite a bit, but at least they can be trusted to not bankrupt the country and then hide it (as the left did)!
Both of them are the major parties and are prone to doing things that earn their politicians a lot of money.

The far right (UKIP) are bloody awful, they have only got exposure due to Europe trying to dominate and dissatisfaction with the other parties.
The centre party (Liberal Democrats) are not ready to rule imo, they havent won an election in a veeeery long time.

Fortunately this time round, we got a coalition of the right and the centre parties (the right being the major share), they unearthed the debt that the left hid and put massive austerity in play. This worked, we are now pulling out but it took over 3 years.
The centre keep the right in check to some extent so we have less extreme laws and some fairer ones.
But there are some things going on that stink of back handers.

This is the best we could hope for in our current situation.

What about the state legislation which actually who it was that crafted this bill? All the governor did was sign his name. To be honest he'd be damned if he didn't too, all the anti-democrat (or anti-liberal as it seems to be known as) voices would scream that he's condoning child pornography or some other 1 + 2 = Kerblitz type logic argument

typical of california to throw a dozen of useless laws at a trivial problem.
They all sound good on paper only.

SB 568 will make California the first state in the nation to require website operators to allow persons under 18-years-old to remove their own postings on that website, and to clearly inform minors how to do so. The operator would not be required to erase that content which may have been re-posted by a third party before the author has removed it..

Maybe my english is bad, but does that say if someone reposts your shit, you're fucked anyway?

You know, nude pics live on forever.

Steinberg huh? The guy who is also banning semi auto rifles. You know, the type of weapon that kills less people in this country than hammers do annually. He isn't bright you don't say?!

You can't post unless you have a delete button. The [H]areOCP Front Page News will have to add an edit/delete button or block CA.

Don't pretty much all the big social networking sites already do what this law says?

This state has the best laws in the country written by the best minds in the country elected by the most intelligent people in the country. Now, for once, kids are free to post the stupidest, most embarrassing actions they've ever committed onto the internet with the comfort of knowing that when it comes time to get a job and become a productive member of society (age 26), they can simply have their transgressions wiped from history. And if California can't delete it from the internet, they will delete the internet.

It's like the Facebook/Google/AT&T provisions for the 4th amendment such that the NSA is not violating your rights because it's a 3rd party that ends up giving them your information that you gave to the 3rd party.
