Mercedes Getting Night Vision That Spots Animals

i don't see that as a problem for me anyways, playing Q3A has honed my skills that i'm focused on one target (what's in front) and still able to see what pops out on the sides without loosing concentration.

So Mercedes is finally trying to catch up to Cadillac?

Quake2 did that for me.

yeah... they will spot animal running out of the forest just before you fuckin hit them. thanks for the split second warning.

Duke Nukem 3D did that for me. ;)

Then the system is even more useless for guys like you that already have the 1337 spotting skills :D

Well now you have a better chance at being able to identify the animal you hit that darted onto the highway at midnight rather than trying to guess based on the fur you're picking out of the body panels on your car the next day.

At least Cadillac had it in a HUD display on the windshield (in 2002 even).

If the car can recognize when animals are jumping out, why not just take a page out of left for dead and just outline the animal or with just a box instead of a picture-in-picture type of deal? Motorists are already having a tough enough time not using their cellphones and crashing already to have a pop up. Soon viagra ads on your windshield when your car is hacked.

Its an interesting tech , but i cant see it to be reliable. My father destroyed a brand new f250 not 2 weeks ago when a moose climbed up a ditch. How can they spot that?

Unless the system is good at predicting the movements of deer, by the time you see them, it's way too late.

We've had two cars with extensive damage from hitting deer.....and that season is quickly approaching.

I agree the HUD should be in the left hand corner of the windshield, not in the dash.

Wall hacks, or ditch hacks rather

well, it's a feature that may save lives, so I think it's worth it, and anyways it's a small step forward in augmented reality and auto-car AI

to be honest, i'd rather prefer a mounted .50 cal, then the lil fucker would learn not to jump in front of my ride

Dead animals tend to have difficulty learning things. The same could be said about some live humans, of course.

Even when you see them, many people slow down and still hit them. They think the deer stops, but as they get closer, the deer darts right in the way and WHAM! Not sure what the deer is thinking darting in front of the car (thinking that's the easiest and quickest way to avoid it?). But, detection is part of it, sure. The avoidance is the hard part...

true, least they won't make that mistake twice, or shoot to maim so they can learn not to do it

Then your ride would hit the corpse and you'd suffer undercarriage damage. Trying to explain a mounted .50 caliber weapon on your vehicle to either the repair man and the police would be interesting as well. :p

They need to make this a HUD system for the driver so animals, pedestrians, whatever, can be spotted easily at night. In fact, why not take it a step further and integrate an augmented reality system tied into mapping software so street names and locations of destinations can be displayed on the HUD if desired? If you're going that route you might as well have the whole enchilada.

It's like the light and beeping noise my vehicle makes when it's slipping on ice.

No shit. Thank's for the startling beeping and flashing shit to pay attention to while I'm already skidding towards my death.

I developed my l33t skillz on Pong, but I must admit that my superior peripheral vision was the result of scanning for ass while playing Pong and not specifically due to the gaming medium itself.

I think browsing ever more ridiculous notepad documents full of random characters for that one string of serial numbers in aol warez helped to tune my l337 vision

This is probably so that you can figure out WTF happened when your car all of a sudden swerves to avoid the obstacle all by it's self... Hopefully it detects that oncoming semi in the other lane and chooses the lesser of the two evils...

So you shoot it, right before you hit it. It's still has the same effect on your car. What you need is a high explosive rocket to turn it into a red mist.

^This^ Even if you see a deer by the road and slow down, sometimes they bolt right in front of you.

They are pretty fast, and can change directions or stop in an instant.

It probably won't be able to figure out whether to go right or left and just split the difference by going between them, thereby hitting both.

It may not be useful in all situations, but there are many situations where it's useful such as detecting animals that are wandering near or on the road up ahead.
