Skype working on 3D video calls? Why? Am I missing something?

"We have it in the lab, we know how to make it work and we're looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market."

Holographic or bust. 3D is as useless as Miley Cyrus outside of a trailer park orgy.

Wohoo... I know people are going to want to see my big fat ugly ass first thing in the morning.

...and the era of Ballmer level stupidity continues. Android does multiple home screens, Microsoft does Metro. The world moves toward 4K and Cable Co.'s move to drop 3D support, Microsoft looks to create 3D phone calls.

Shareholders wonder why Microsoft is losing ground quickly as an innovative consumer company. They just aren't anymore. Like IBM and Samsung they're just trying to catch up or stay with the times. At least Samsung is starting to show some serious progress while Microsoft can't even get a foot hold in most places much less keep it.

Someone please put in a Skype call to Microsoft and remind them that the 3D fad died again just like it did in the last time someone tried to make a big deal out of it or the time before that.

3D is a whole lot of stupidity.
What I don't understand is why we're not seeing more advancements in holography over 3D imagery on a 2D plane.

Three words for you naysayers....

3D Porn Chat

That was my first thought. Girl cams will jump for this.

3D is a whole lot of stupidity.
What I don't understand is why we're not seeing more advancements in holography over 3D imagery on a 2D plane.

Having the oft-envisioned sci-fi "holotank" video device would be sweet, but I think we underestimate the sheer cash cost of space. Whether in the home or in the workplace, taking visual displays from a plane to a cube is a huge loss of available volume, especially at the sizes we are becoming accustomed to.

And then there's this factor: Even though our vision is stereoscopic, it's from a fixed point of view. We can't see the back of a person we are looking at, or the other side of a building or a car. So in a sense, creating all that visual detail via true holography is wasted.

Great, cause I need to speak to my parents in 3D once a week, or it's just not the same:rolleyes:
