A new bill known as the Cyber Economic Espionage Accountability Act was introduced on Thursday; giving US authorities power to take severe actions against foreign nationals engaging in hacking or other forms of cybercrimes. The bill would impose restrictions on assets in the US, possible deportation from the US and denial of entry to the US if abroad.

"Theft of U.S. intellectual property is costing our economy an estimated $300 billion a year. It costs American jobs, innovation, and threatens national security," said Senator Ron Johnson. "It's time there are repercussions for these brazen acts taken by foreign actors.

Again, the worth is vastly overstated. $300 billion? I seriously doubt it. $3 billion, probably. That's still a lot of money and should be punished. Hackers who actually cost people money need to be punished.

Moreover, the severe A-----es who make those fake anti-virus extortion-ware programs need to be punished the most. Hang them up by their toes and lash them with two dozen plastic zip ties for a week straight once every 90 days for the rest of their lives. (The once every 90 days would be to allow them to heal so we could do it again.) During the off time, make them listen to Taylor Swift 24/7. That might be punishment enough.

What happens if you find US companies that are patent infringers of non-domestic businesses then? Pat on the back and a thank you from POTUS? Stand up Apple, your time is now.

Fashion Industry and no IP still makes more money than the Record Industry...go figure.

Same goes with automotive.

Then there's the tech industry; they contribute 100s of times more than software/entertainment industries...yet the mafiAA has more protections.

it's one of those "Quick! Call Penn and Teller...'cuz this is total BS" moments.

What about the US hackers? Like the government and police? Is there a provision for them? If the US sends out another stuxnet and gets caught, can the government kick out its own people?

BTW, this article implies that the hackers are inside the country. Or can US seize/freeze assets even if they're in China?

Also, does this mean there are no penalties for hacking right now?

"Yeah! We dont want DefCon here anway, and lets force all those ultra smart innovators out as well, ^&*% the economy we don't want it anyway." - RabbleRabble

Let idiocracy triumph.

/sarcasm off

We deserve what we get when we put these people in office.

This won't allow the US to seize assets that are overseas, unless that nation already has some sort of legal agreement with them. This will NOT allow them to seize assets that are located in places such as China.

The idea is that if they have any money in US banks/investments, then the government can seize that.

As for US Government hackers, well, from the look of the news and so on, their hackers are a bit of a joke.

In terms of actual domestic hackers, there are already pushes for harsher punishment, etc.

There are indeed punishments for hacking, but if the person who is hacking you is doing so from a foreign country, then there is VERY LITTLE that can be done about it in a legal sense. You think some Chinese hacker is gonna show up for trial in the US for charges of hacking?

This is just a power grab while attention is diverted, these are not the droids your looking for.

"threatens national security,"

seriously......toss that into any bill and POOF! it passes.

You cannot steal "Intellectual Property" since it is fictitious and does not exist except as an artificial construction of the state. It is like saying the stealing of souls is costing the US $300 billion.

It seems that "security of corporate pocketbooks" and "national security" are one in the same these days. Anytime a corporation's illegitimate profits are threatened, it is a "threat" to national security and the US goes and invades or harasses another country. Congress is nothing but a bunch of criminals and prostitutes.

Exactly. 2% of the entire country's GDP? Or, looking at it another way...$1000 for every man, woman and child in the country. Absolute crap no matter how you look at it...

This is just a ploy to make it seem like everything's wrong because of "foreigners" and not domestic people; It's a blatant "other guy" issue.

But it will mean nothing because the US can't do shit about shit, especially when shit is actually hard. Let's see when all the "Chinese" hackers get deported (or "imported") or German, or Russian.

Good! Maybe China and Russia will start deporting their hackers to the US while we send ours to them. It'll totally be like that Russian kid we had at high school and the American kid we sent to them instead. Yeah, we got such a better deal since the Russian guy was amazing!

The problem...hacking and criminal behavior is already illegal, already allows deportation and is not envorced any better than this would be.

Without even looking I will make a prediction: This law is stupid and I bet there is some kind of updated language to let it legitimize the 'secret wire tap' policy that's going on now for spying on citizens.

I hate to say it but in today's times: Do not trust the lawmakers.

I hate the fact that the damage estimates are always exaggerated to laughable extremes. Not that it changes the fact that these asshats need to be punished. I say we string them up by their balls & feed them ex-lax! :D

"...giving US authorities power to take severe actions against foreign nationals..."

"It's time there are repercussions for these brazen acts taken by foreign actors. " lol

"300 billion" shut up.

I wonder what chunk of that is reported by the RIAA/MIAA

What they mean by 300 Billion is if you account for the profits made in other countries by entities who stole the IP from a US source then it's easy to see how they got that number. What they should be doing is importing the goods from the US. So yes it is costing us quite a bit.

And BTW how anyone could disagree with the implication of this bill is beyond me. We live in a world fueled by capitalism. Without protection of IP tghe system fails... So what we go communist? We go socialist? (not that those are totally bad ideas... but cannot work without full A.I.) what do the naysayers want here? Just arguing to argue? Anti-establishment?
