Ever wonder how much data you can use on Verizon's unlimited plan? Apparently 77TB a month is where they draw the line.

I have never heard of this happening to anyone. But I probably use more bandwidth than any FIOS customer in California so I am not super surprised about this. My monthly bandwidth usage so far this year has been:
  • January: 35 TB
  • February: 32 TB
  • March: 77TB
  • April: 28TB
  • May: 19TB (so far).
So anyway it sounds like I am just going to be going back to business and paying more again. They used the whole 'You can't run servers on residential service' and we will disconnect you by July 14th if you don't stop the activity or change to business.

That odd/random number is conflicting with my minor OCD.

77TB's is plenty though.

Here i thought those nasty letters from Comcast for using 3TB a month was bad. This guy takes the cake.

They used the whole 'You can't run servers on residential service'

Which is what he was doing. Maybe they weren't mad about the bandwidth usage, maybe they were mad about the inbound connections/usage.

How the F did they even manage to download that much over Verizon? Where I live I think I could let it run continuously for a month and never reach 77 TB given the speeds I get.

I really don't see the issue here lol 77tb on home consumer level internet I mean come on. I have used like 2-3tb a month maybe and that's downloading at least 8 hours a day. If your running a sever in your home you need to have buisness if it's passing that much traffic.

Normally I would say who's to determine one's home usage but honestly, 77TB is taking it way too far. He was obviously running more than a "small home business". If you need that much throughput, get a proper server host or business line.

WE DON'T HAVE THE whole story about the bandwidth

APPARENTLY the guy runs a business and needs the bandwidth for ..something he was PAYING for business but switched to residential- 2 lines- because it was half the price of the single business line.

also, the person he talked to said,,,what he had for a business line ALSO would have triggered the call and make him upgrade to a new plan- for dedicated line which is even more.

That sort of setup belongs in a datacenter, bandwidth costs real money.

No, bandwidth is cheap. 77 TB a month is (7.7 * 10^13 * 8) / (30*24*60*60) = 237654320 bits per second on average ~= 237 megabits of traffic on average (bandwidth is priced at 95th percentile, usually, so that'd be a strictly smaller number, but whatever). That includes both in and out traffic:

Bandwidth is also priced for a full-duplex connection (which can transfer in and out at the same time). So really he only used 41 TB of bits, which can be transferred over 126 megabits of internet bandwidth. So assuming Verizon is paying full retail price for his bandwidth, that sounds like 126 * $3.13 = $394 of bandwidth!

But that's assuming that all of his traffic is going to other providers. If he's talking to anyone else on the Verizon network, that traffic is essentially free.

And Verizon doesn't pay anything like $3 per megabit for transit. There are enough customers on the Verizon network that they probably get a good bit of free transit, and any bandwidth they're paying for, they're buying in such bulk that I'd be surprised if it's a tenth of that price.

No, Verizon should suck it up. Advertise based on this! "This guy used 77TB in a single month, and we let him keep using our service! Suck it, ComFinity!"

and here I taught I had a problem doing about 1T a month on my verizon fios connection.

Ohh never mind, it's FIOS...thought they were talking about 4G for some reason.

At 77 tb, he's probably making more money than he's paying.

how the fuck do you use 77tb? You have to be serving up lots of porn.
At an average of 300MB per video, that's 256,000 videos.

I haven't delved into the details of my Fios T&Cs but I suspect there is something in there about commercial usage of a residential line ... given his consumption levels and the fact he is technically a commercial user he should have a business line (or stop using his line commercially) ;)

What kind of business does this dude run that he gobbles up that much bandwidth and has servers for? pr0n?

Yeah.... I don't feel sympathy for this dude. He's running a business on a residential line. That's a no. It specifically states it in the TOS when you sign up. Don't care why he's doing it or any other reasons, he tried to cheat the system.

He probably used closer to 150mbit bandwidth 95th percentile, since only the greater inbound/outbound is metered, the inbound wouldn't actually count. Generally it works out to about 200gb/mo outbound ~= 1mbit 95th percentile. Smaller commits would be valued at around $3/mbit, so he was using $450/mo worth of bandwidth, probably more since it wasn't on a 100mbit drop but larger. The bandwidth doesn't stay on Verizon's network so peering and transit costs apply as well. Retail value of the bandwidth being used was probably something like $850.

ganged 150Mbps links

the issue isnt how much data as he was running servers on a res plan which it says you cant in the TOS

ether way 70TB is a FUCKING LOT of data and it wasnt even a hard cap
they just warned him he was close so im guessing the limit is more like 100TB which if your your pulling more then 10TB you really should be on a business plan any way

I was looking at the numbers and didn't really understand the problem, then it dawned on me...

TB, not GB.

Jesus. 77TB in one month?

I don't even think our 25,000 person company uses 77TB of data in a month.

Does it say anywhere what this guy was pushing? Anything? I'm curious what generates that much data traffic in a small home business besides p0rn.

servers of some kind on 2x 150Mbps links ganged together

Nah. He is probably a lot different than you, and actually prefers high definition porn, so double that figure - 600 MB per video. 128,000 videos. :D

77TB. Yes, he needs either a business line and/or a colo server somewhere.

how big of a loser one must be to use that much data. is this guy on the face transplant list? even if so thats still a lot of data.

That's info that's good to know actually.

If that is Verizon's policy, Frontier likely mimmics it.

I've been mildly worried the last year or so as our streaming and HD video usage goes up. It's not terribly hard to use 1 TB a month. It really isn't.

But even I do try to be kind to the connection. You can't be an asshole your whole life or you just ruin something good (fiber) for everyone else.

600mb is HD? :p Just downloaded Parker (good movie btw) and it weighed in at a whopping 42gb.

I really don't know.... Just doubled the 300MB..... :)

Mine are only 4GB-7GB, but they are ripped and encoded in different formats...

He's not running a business on a residential line, read the thread linked at dslreports. Three people have received notices and none of them are running a business, this is strictly about the amount of data they are using, they're just using the server clause as an excuse to get them to move over to a business line.

Verizon's TOS states:

Restrictions on Use. The Service is a consumer grade service and is not designed for or intended to be used for any commercial purpose. You may not resell, re-provision or rent the Service, (either for a fee or without charge) or allow third parties to use the Service via wired, wireless or other means. For example, you may not provide Internet access to third parties through a wired or wireless connection or use the Service to facilitate public Internet access (such as through a Wi-Fi hotspot), use it for high volume purposes, or engage in similar activities that constitute such use (commercial or non-commercial). If you subscribe to a Broadband Service, you may connect multiple computers/devices within a single home to your modem and/or router to access the Service, but only through a single Verizon-issued IP address. You also may not exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that Verizon may establish from time to time for the Service, or use the Service to host any type of server. Violation of this section may result in bandwidth restrictions on your Service or suspension or termination of your Service.

He is a loser because he uses this much data? you don't even know what he is doing with bandwidth all we know he is a running a server from his house.

The only person that looks like a loser here is you with the retarded comment.

These are the jackasses that cause them to have to have limits in the first place.

oops hit reply too quickly...

I don't think I've ever used over 50 or 60 GB in a month.

We all know "unlimited data" is a marketing ploy, kudos to this guy from pushing it to the limit, rebel rebel all the way.

Hardcore pirate can't download more than 77TB's of blurays and porn, boo f#cking hoo

read the whole original thread.... I am amazed how many white knights seep out of the woodwork every time a topic like this comes up.

you pay for unlimited data, exercise your dollar.
