Uploading a history book to your website so your students can have access to it? I hope they throw the book at this hardened criminal!

A teacher received a huge shock last week after uploading a copy of a book to his website that offers free educational resources for students. The Latvian publisher behind the work, a $4.00 history book, complained to the authorities which resulted in the teacher being raided by the police. During interrogation the teacher learned that his mistake could cost him dearly – two years in jail, forced labor, or a fine.

Teachers have been doing this with the copy machine and a stapler for years.

The electric chair for that monster!!!

1: "what you in for?"
2. "uploading a book for my students, you?"
1. "murder"
2. "am i your bitch now?"
1. ;)

Since the raid a meeting has taken place during which some kind of a settlement was discussed. Further meetings will take place this week but it’s now believed that the publisher will not raise any “substantive claims” against the teacher.

Anyway, use some common sense ffs. I agree the authorities go way over the top. Maybe it is just who is contacted and if they are bored? Dunno. Chill out a bit though. No need to run about with a screaming boner of justice in this case.

I do want to point out that you are the first (and only) person to scream "boner of justice!" :D

This was the best use of police resources? Really?

There isn't a single case of human trafficking or violent crime that was more important?

A lot of smoke and mirrors these days. Lets go after a teacher for uploading a book that they bought, so students can use it. The teacher had enough decency to save some trees and not photocopy it. Gotta screw over the little guy, but politicians can accept brides from lobbyists in order to get their legislature through the congress.

Gotta applaud the teacher for doing such a thing. Books for college are criminally overpriced junk. On top of that, lets say there's a 7th edition, but the 6th is cheaper and there's like no difference, some companies got smart and started to rearrange their pages, just to get you to buy the latest edition.

That teacher is a hero.

that takes actual time and work.

these copyright raids are currently the best value for dollar policework.

When you have corporations making laws by lobbying this is what happens. Be interesting to see how messed up things will get as time moves on.

Boner of Justice...haha. Reminds me of the movie scene where Jay in the Mooby first sees Justice.

Anyway, I'm glad this seems to be settling down and an agreement between the teacher and the publisher is coming to fruition. I saw no need for an all out raid to take place, but at least no one got hurt. The teacher's intentions were good, and I like that the publisher seems to be placing a bit of focus on that. Speaks well for the publisher and that they aren't all about money but instead the product they offer.

Wow they don't fuck around over there a $4 book gets you arrest, hell over here you need to download a few gay pornos worth maybe $20 and even then they only ridicule you to your neighbors, to actually get arrested for IP theft... ummm I'd guess you'd have to steal Windows 9 today and then post that online, or post emails between senators on reddit.

Good riddance!

I hope the woman feels remorse for all the pain, anguish, and suffering she has caused. Hopefully the children will be able to recover in counseling, and the original author is reimbursed the millions of dollars he would otherwise have made from this.

I had some professors in college who would adjust their syllabuses to accommodate both editions like "Do questions on page 127 2nd Edition, 138 3rd Edition".

This.

Publishers have gotten too greedy and are in bed with the school unions/administrators.
Even worse are the professors that require students to buy overpriced books written by the professors, that are rarely used in the class.

Schools need to develop public domain books/resources (luckily some universities are already doing this), that can be distributed electronically for free. This would help keep the schools more affordable for students.

international editions of book are great. check ebay or half.com and you have college books for around 1/5 of the cost. my math book (us edition) was $250 on campus and $60 on ebay (international edition)...
the only difference? the cover. every problem and example exactly the same. :D

Are any schools even trying to move toward digital books, or is there too much greed?

greed, i remember most of my general ed instructor will force the students to buy the latest edition. The difference? probably 5% a few chapters reorder here and there. It wasn't until I got to my upper division computer science classes that the instructors will recommend old editions or pdf copy ;)

Teacher need to be paid more, I dont see how this got so escalated that publisher must have had a bad day why didnt they just email or mail certified a cease and deaset letter to the teacher to take it down? Waste of time, resources, and tax payers money.

Great, now I've got this picture in my mind of some dork in a superhero costume accosting evildoers with "taste my screaming boner of justice!", and mouth raping them with a huge dildo.

I can just picture some judge using that phrase while sentencing a scumbag.
