Damn, it seems like Google Glass is really getting beat up in the press lately. The latest news? The Google Glass FAQ says they can be bad for your eyes. Thanks to Martin M. for the link.

Glass isn’t for everyone. Like when wearing glasses, some people may feel eye strain or get a headache. If you’ve had Lasik surgery, ask your doctor about risks of eye impact damage before using Glass. Don’t let children under 13 use Glass as it could harm developing vision. Also, kids might break Glass or hurt themselves, and Google’s terms of service don’t permit those under 13 to register a Google account. If Glass is not for you and you wish to return it, do so before the end of the applicable refund period.

In other words, focusing on something less than an inch from your eye can be bad for your vision. Like we did not know that already.

The movie 'The Jerk' comes to mind. He gets rich off some newfangled glasses only to find out they make people cross-eye. Gets sued, loses everything.

I don't understand what all the hub-bub is all about. It's not like anyone (besides me) plans on watching 30 hours of hi-def porn on them while doing their air-traffic controller shift are they?

I had been assuming that it had some sort of optics in the eyepiece that lets you focus on it without straining. Fatshark goggles have the LCD about an inch from your eyes, but the optics make it seem like you're focusing on something two meters away... so ironically, you'll still need corrective lenses if you're near sighted.

That could be a problem considering the resolution is 640x360 and the image is transparent.

Now I'm worried. Remember what the Opti-Grab did to Carl Reiner back in '79?

They have to say that, because if they didn't someone would sue them because it happened.

Yeah. Sounds like another case of "Its bad for EVERYONE! Dont say we didn't warn you!" crap, just in case something bad could happen.

Makes me think of drug commercials, how they talk about the benefits of this drug with scenery of elderly couples walking happily through the woods, young couples swinging on a swing set, laughing children running on the lawn, the sun is shining.

Then at the last 20 seconds of the drug commercial there's a long diatribe of how dangerous the drug can be, how it can fuck you up, causes side effect, and kill you and make your cat impotent and the possibility of Daryl having to shoot you in the head with an arrow should you come back from the dead after taking the drug.

I remember when I was a kid, adults used to tell me that watching too much television was bad for my eyes too. lulz

Me too, but I still tell my kids that too. They only tell you that to get you to do something else besides sitting on your ass watching television all day.

Heh, knew it. Posted two days ago that logically having something beamed right into your eye couldn't be good for you in this other Google Glass thread.

People laughed at the idea of serious nerve issues occurring from something as simple as typing, and sure enough there are quite a few people with carpel tunnel syndrome. And that is no fun, can create numbness in fingers, real pain, and shaky hands. After seeing a coworker having to wear braces and bitching and moaning, I wised up and get an ergonomic just for that reason and adjusted my posture to not be such a slouch with a kink in my wrists.

There will certainly be people that will be wearing google glasses 8, 10, 12 hours a day, day after day, and if that causes them blurred vision and other problems a couple years down the road then that's a big problem.

Same thing with VR glasses, they found that using them for more than 3hours straight can cause not only nausea but cause you to drive worse than someone considered legally drunk.

Its certainly worth investigating this stuff so that people know, hey, you should only wear those glasses a few hours at a time and then give them a rest.

does this mean the retail version of Glass is going to be even cheaper so they can get a large market share before people start going blind?

It might be better if it did beam it into your eye, that way you wouldn't have to strain to get a clear visual of the image

"The side effects may include but are not limited to: priapism, tourette's, dizziness, migraine headach, loss of sex appeal to women, loss of economic earning potential, impotence, incontinence, loss of libido, loss of appetite, weight gain, weight loss, loss of appetite and uncontrollable flatulence."

Considering you can't physically focus 1" from your eye, unless you have horrible near sightedness, it needs create a virtual image that's farther away from you so you can focus.

Nintendo put similar warnings up on their 3DS boxes and in the game system itself. I've literally spent over a hundred hours using mine, and I'm perfectly TV.

And the virtual boy made me go blind as a kid and so did dactal nightmare virtuality mchines.

Is there some truth behind "Reading in the dark will damage you eyes"? I never really got an explanation on that. AFAIK, lack of light won't hurt you any more than a camera taking pictures in the dark.

Yes and no.

The fact that you may be holding something in dim light close to your eyes for extended periods can cause myopia. It is important to let your eyes relax and focus on distant objects from time to time.

This is an old wives tale, there is scant little eveidence showing that looking at things up close for extended periods of time causes any sort of permanent eye changes.
