SXSW interactive conference in Austin, Texas is beginning to break some rather interesting news on upcoming product releases and one such product generating a good deal of interest is the 3D scanner announced by MakerBot. Called the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, the device can take a physical object, scan it, digitalize it and store it for 3D printing.

“With the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, now everyone will be able to scan a physical item, digitize it, and print it in 3D – with little or no design experience”

if i judge their performance from history i'll have to wait for a future version instead of gen 1 hardware :)

What a boom for the porn industry.

Seriously though, sounds real cool but wonder how much it costs.

Not really, it is currently only good for items 8" long. :p

Unless you are talking about the Asian porn industry.

On a serious note. Being able to easily and quickly digitize a hand made prototype for archival, and future printing will be a boon to many industries. Especially the knock off industry. Why buy, then ship overseas. When you can buy, scan, return, and then email the file to some knock off shop in Asia.

This sort of thing will be great for replacement parts for hard to find stuff. How many times has an otherwise perfectly functional device of some kind failed because a stupid plastic clip broke, but glue just won't handle the strain? Glue it, scan it, print it, and new part. You could make home-made legos, replace broken toy parts, and God knows what else.

Why even buy?

"You wouldn't download a car", Bullshit I wouldn't.
