After years of being banned and countless appeals by the public and lobbying groups, the Australian government finally passed a bill allowing for a new R18+ rating, paving the way for the sale of video games considered by the government to contain excessive violence.

While the tight controls were laudable for ensuring that young gamers weren't subjected to games too violent for their age, the lack of an "adult" category resulted in mature gamers missing out on the original content of a host of games.

Based on the things they have banned in the past, does this mean they will see virtual blood for the first time?

About fucking time australia joined the 21st century, before the government just felt fucking inept entirely

"Ok, this game is rated 18+, can we bring it here?"

"Sorry, there is no 18+ rating for australia, so you can't release the game here"

"What do you mean no 18+ rating?"

"We don't have a 18+ rating in australia, so no adult media here"

"Wait, what? So why don't you make a law?"

"We don't need a law, cause there's no 18+ rated material in australia"

"......clearly there is 18+ media, so why not make a law for it?"

"But we don't need a law, because there is no 18+ rated material in australia"

"*holds it in their hand* Clearly, there is 18+ media here, and I wish to release it here in australia"

"You can't release it here, cause there is no 18+ rated material in australia"

"That's because there is no law for 18+ rated material there, why not make a law for it then?"

"Why do we need a law for it? There is no 18+ rated material in austrailia"

"..........................."

repeat till today

The censoring of games in Australia has baffled me for years. It seemed more like a clerical error that there was no 18+ rating for games and a couple of nuts just rolled with it as an excuse to censor and ban games. We were getting plenty of violent and gruesome games that SHOULD have been rated "restricted 18+", but instead were rated "recommended 15+", then randomly a game here and a game there would get censored/banned for no good reason compared to other games that made it through fine.

I commend Australia for wanting to make it difficult for youth to view things that are inappropriate. However, they took way too long to make this law. Censorship is a bad thing if it means that adults can't get content that they want.

Take Left 4 Dead as one example:

There's a huge difference between the two. There's no reason why I, an adult, should not be able to play the more graphic version. I commend companies that give the option to vary the gore level in games, but leave it up to the consumer to choose. Leave it up to parents to make those choices, not the government.

So, thanks Australia, for sort of getting closer to something that resembles actual free speech.

The Australians are insane. They just cannot get over where they came from, and try to by promoting the whiter-than-white American far right model of living, is not going to change anyone's thoughts about the average Aussie. By and large, they are good people, and reading crazy stuff like this about them just makes people think they are a bunch of crazy, far right, xenophobic morons.

Barin washing, mind control, and going to church on a Sunday will all be mandatory soon...

Change of government needed methinks.

Hopefully this rating titled as Adult and 18+ will stick to parents brains as more important.
