GTX 650 vs Radeon 7770

I bought the GTX 650 and its an excellent little card. Here's why i bought it:

1- low power consumption vs competing cards at that performance level
2- fps cap using nvidia inspector
3- game profiles
4- physX
5- nvidia 3d
6- i run mine passively cooled so it makes no noise.

Im really happy with it however iv not used a radeon card since the 5000 series so don't really know what they have to offer.

Yeah, HD-7770 is definitely faster than the GTX-650. The GTX-650ti is its competition, not the plain 650.

1- a 7750 uses the same amount of power and is just as fast
2- your card will not even come close to getting high eneough framerates for cap to matter in most newer games. also you can set cap for AMD cards too with something like afterburner
3- yes those are good but I think you can do that for AMD using Radeon pro
4- physx means nothing as a 650 does not have the gpu power to spare in the first place
5- a 650 is too slow for nvidia 3d to even be a playable option for modern games
6- okay

1- fair enough
2- for games like the witcher 2 i cap it at 30, for games like dishonored i cap it at 60 and for online multilayer games i cap it at 75fps. It depends on the game and what settings you select.
3- yeah i love game profiles, i didn't know amd used them now
4- physx on low works OK, again depends on the game.
5- i dont use 3d for games, just movies so don't really know. But if it halves the fps then all the games i play at 60 would still be playable at 30fps.
6- yeah passive gpu is definitely OK :)

If you already spend so much on a system, why not get a real gaming card?

A 7870 is the current bang for the buck.

OP why are you picking an entry level GPU to go with a unlocked core i5 based PC. In fact if you are short on cash I would suggest a core i5 CPU with H77 motherboard and get a HD 7870. you will get massive gaming performance. HD 7870 will be close to 2x the perf of HD 7770.

a stock cooler is enough for core i5. so you save 110 bucks. The ANTEC 300 is a very nice cabinet. spacious and with good cooling. 45 bucks (30 after mail in rebate).

with the saved money get a PCS+ HD 7870 (1.1 Ghz)

In fact if you are short on cash I would suggest a core i5 CPU with H77 motherboard and get a HD 7950. you will get massive gaming performance. HD 7950(1.1 Ghz) matches HD 7970 Ghz and will be 2.5x - 2.7x the perf of HD 7770.

Actually I've already brought all the parts besides the GPU. I'd like to spend $60-80 after rebate for the GPU. I want to run most games on med-high. The 650 or the 7770 will fit my needs fine.

If your aim is just a cheap GPU and your options are 7770 or 650 I would go with the 7770.

I wonder why the highend cpu coupled with a entry level gpu. I guess gaming is not a priority.

Anyway if the 7770 fits your needs, go ahead.

If you can bump up your GPU budget, it would be well worth it. Otherwise, go for the 7770!

It was cheap. What do you guys suggest I get?
well you backed yourself into a corner a bit by skimping so badly on the psu. that is the entry level series and makes relatively little power on the 12v line and is also rated at unrealistic temps. for 15-20 bucks more you could have bought a way better unit suited towards a gaming pc.

^ CX430 is enough for any single gpu system on an intel i5... it's a CWT. It's not a bad PSU but as long as you don't run a ton of accessories, it will be fine - and that's more a problem with the low quality short circuit protection, no the wattage.

Remember, Quality > Quantity. And the cx430 has a ton of power on the 12v line...it's more than enough for his needs.

lol at someone trying to defend the 650 over a 7770. people make bad hardware choices.

If OP places CPU intensive games like starcraft, or likes to stream his gameplay, then going with an i5 and 7770 is a great value conscious purchase. If you have an i5/i7 you'd start streaming your gameplay when you otherwise couldn't, just because you have the power to.

This is just a perfect build for a MOBA/RTS/MMORPG system, especially for streaming. Hell you could just play any game, and then stream it, because the cpu is strong enough. Great purchase. No need for a high end GPU if you don't play high end games.

And a 7770 will still play modern games on decent graphics. I personally have an i7-3770K@5ghz, 2200mhz CL8 RAM, and then a gtx 460 (and the 460 is still overkill for my needs) because all I do is stream sc2. It's not graphics intensive at all, but it uses a TON of CPU power because of streaming on a slow bitrate for a really good quality and a great 1080@60fps stream and keeping good fps in large sc2 battles.

well a cx430 is not a very good choice for a real gaming pc and does not make a lot of power on the 12v line at all. it only makes 384 watts max on the 12v and its ratings are only for 30 C too. its more than fine if all he wants is a 7770 but to run a gpu more suited to the pc he was going to build then its silly not to spend 20 bucks more for a much more suitable psu. that would allow him to run a higher end gpu and oc both the cpu and gpu.

and how bored are you to uselessly dig up a 6 month old thread?
