Well, he’s back….again. This time Kim Dotcom is proposing something useful to New Zealanders: High speed broadband at a very low rate. Dotcom wants to re-start the Pacific Fiber Cable project with investors at a cost of $400 M to provide fast, affordable broadband to New Zealanders and to attract new online business concerns.

"You have clean and cheap energy here. Power is becoming the biggest cost factor for data centres around the world. With its own cable, cheap power and connectivity New Zealand could attract foreign internet business.

Let's get two things straight right now..

1. We do NOT have cheap power in New Zealand.
2. Kim dot com is a loudmouthed moron who will never be involved in the plan as the US would block any plan that had the aforementioned moron was involved with.

This guy is really starting to annoy me. Why are they giving this guy the time of day is beyond me.

They will need to improve their legal system, so businesses don't get raided and have all their data stolen with just a word from the MPAA/RIAA.

Ummm latency is going to prevent foreign internet businesses from setting up shop in NZ (unless foreign means he's trying to attract businesses from Australia, latency from there might not be that bad)

Why run a cable from NZ to Los Angeles?

Because at the moment we only have one cable through Australia (for the whole country!) so having two would mean a whole lot more bandwidth and eliminate the monopoly which in theory should lower the price.

The project was started a couple of years ago and not until early this year abandoned because they did not get enough investor to chip in, a common theme when in comes to NZ minuscule economy.

Even if Dotcom managed to get his fund unfreezed and somehow go through with it, there is no way US govt would allow any of it to happen.

Yeah..... No.

There's more than just one cable.

Going to fund it by suing the studios?

Pfft.

This'll happen sometime AFTER the Phantom console comes out then.

The studios have enough money and clout to bury his suit in paperwork and red tape until his great-great-great-great grandkids are old and gray.

Sounded like there was backlash against having allowed the above. Dotcom is probably trying to leverage that. He also wants the fiber optic cable project restarted because he probably wants to increase the firehose between NZ and the rest of the world so he can locate part of his operation there. Especially if he intends on doing music streaming.

And the MPAA/RIAA's favorite candidate may not be around in 3 months. Why do you think Dotcom is making moves now.
