Are you a computer geek? If you said yes, the Department of Homeland Security wants you to join the National Emergency Technology (NET) Guard.

The Cyber Reserve would function like a National Guard for computer-related emergencies — a collection of digerati scattered across the country but ready to respond when duty calls. This isn’t exactly a new idea. The same law Congress passed in 2002 that established the Department of Homeland Security grants the department permission to build a “National Emergency Technology (NET) Guard” of on-call volunteer specialists to assist in cyber crises.

If it's anything like the TSA, prepare for fail. It will be a bunch of Xbox Live asshats thinking they have power over the minions.

I'd be interested in this if it was general IT though, not just hacking. I know some people in the reserves and one for technology would be interesting.

i am in for it looks like a way to do something for the betterment of the country. now all they need is a simple application process and a boot camp.

I'd be in if it weren't for the term "volunteer" attached for it. I'm more of a merc-for-hire than the volunteer type. If there was a paycheck involved, then maybe. I already give the government too much of my time and money "for free".

The Government can piss off. They spend every waking moment trying to figure out ways to monitor and control the internet and keep their evil Big Brother eye up the citizens asses.

Humm. Government-sponsored with brown shirt uniforms? Couldn't they have come up with a better color that doesn't have a history?! Blue? White? Black? Shirt color aside, I *think* I like the idea but don't know if it's really necessary. What do we have the other datacenters/intelligence communities/private sector for? Why have the same government who can't run a railroad in the black run another program? I'd much rather see this in the private sector with a liaison to the government.

If they want to build a force to attack or defend from other countries over the net, that's fine, that's necessary for the future.

What will probably happen is that the RIAA/MPAA will convince our idiots into leveraging this to attack kids stealing their content.

hah I'm already underpaid at my current IT job -- why the hell would I want to give my time and skills away for free?

I'd help out. I like to put my skills to good use. Weather spotter, ham operator... I can do IT work in disaster areas.

Don't the reserves at least get money for college or something?
Can I put this on my resume and run for congress saying I've served my country?

Thinking?

Just wait until they are reading all your emails and private posts. I'm sure they won't abuse that to stalk people they know in real life. I'm sure...

No self respecting white or black hat would bother with this crap. Move along nothing to see here.

Really, how good would a reserve be, if someone starts hacking you. Think they'll rush over and defend whatever it is that they are defending in time?
