Before, I used to spend thousands of dollars on drinking and partying with my friends. Now I spend $5,000 on in-game items for my iPad games...and I'm totally better off!

Lee says that spending money on games like Clash of Clans is actually saving him money in the long-run: Before he started gaming, he says he and a small group of friends would go out drinking, sometimes spending as much as $6,000 in a single night between them.

I think if they can manage to spend $6k a night in alcohol, they have more problems to worry about than how much they spend on games....

seriously.....

I am definitely hanging with the wrong crowd ... thousands of dollars drinking ... IN ONE NIGHT

That or they need to stop buying gold plated drinks with gold and diamonds in them. Those are expensive.

I don't know what's worse. The fact that they spend this much on games or that these games are basically the equivalent of farmville. I mean at least play real games.

Although seriously I'm baffled how anyone can blow six grand on a night of drinking and partying, unless it's some 1% of the wealth kind of establishment, where they have more money than sense, but at least he's found a way of prolonging the life of his liver and blowing six grand on utterly useless s#!te, rather than tuck that 6k into savings or some sort of retirement fund.

Tell you what Lee, I can call you Lee right?

I can give you the same experience, you give me six grand every week, and I will send a paw painting my cat made on a piece of writing paper, as it's effectively as useful as the virtual item your s#!*ting good money away on.

Looks like people still fork over hundreds of dollars per bottle at "classy" clubs.

douche nozzle. i refuse to click the link because i assume that will give this assbag money.

Um, even better, don't spend the $5k, and just play the free to play games. Duh.

One of the Stanley Cup champion teams ran up a tab of $160k+ here in Vegas for one night of drinking.

Granted, the $100k bottle helped out.

I do remember times in my youth when I'd spend as much as $300 on drinks in a night, and do 3-4 nights of clubbing, barhopping, or pool playing in a week, spending close to $1000/month on entertainment. Of course, that was back in the 90s, when it was a good deal cheaper. It wasn't all that fun, either. My so called friends would frequently tear me down with insults, stab me in the back by making me designated driver for a whole week at a time, or stick me with the bill. It really wasn't all that fun. Half the time I'd feel worse about myself than when I went out.

These days I have been known to spend up to $100 in a weekend on keys in STO. (Darn lockboxes, lots of good stuff, but rare drops, and lots of junk, but the chance of good stuff keeps drawing me in to open them, with keys costing $1.125 each. I think the few polarized disruptors I have cost me about $20 each.) It's a lot cheaper than clubbing, and, overall, more rewarding. I certainly feel better about myself after a night of gaming compared to a night of clubbing.

wrong i think what youre offering is far better, he'd actually get some tangible item in return for his money.

let me continue with the ragery

Before he started gaming, he says he and a small group of friends would go out drinking, sometimes spending as much as $6,000 in a single night between them.
How small is his group of friends? And what the fuck was he drinking that cost $6k a night between them.

"I totally save money now because I smoke crack, I used to pay high priced escorts $2000 a night to make me feel better, but for $100 worth of crack I manage to get that same euphoric feeling for much cheaper, it's literally saving me thousands a week!"

Yea... over $200 per person is already asking for a stomach pump. $6k total? Cocaine and hookers were involved. This guy is a shitslurping turdfarmer.

He's doing it wrong. You still go out drinking.

Then you play games.

And here I was regretting I spent two hundred at the bar recently.

This F2P business model is sadly becoming the norm for a lot of games. Look at all the games out there on Facebook that are F2P. To progress in these games you either have to wait ludicrous amount of time to obtain X item or buy it. I currently play one of these games and have friends who have dropped literally thousands into it. Instead of paying $50 or $60 one time for a game like we are all used to. Publishers have realized they can pull in millions more by choosing this alternate model, and sad thing is, folks are falling for it.

$6k a night between how many friends? Also depending on location, that's not a hard number to hit. Don't forget buying drinks for the ladies too. I know by myself, I could easily blow through $1k a night drinking, but I limit myself to $50. Not to mention, pre-game before going to the bar/clubs. Why blow $8+ a drink, when you can just chug some whiskey/vodka/etc before going there.

I will admit, I do spend money on F2P games also. Like I'm playing Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliance. I spend about $5 every month on it. Big spender here! Find that's a better investment than buying the next CoD.

Reminds me of an episode of White Collar where a group of stock tip brokers go out for a night on the town every month and one of them has to put the bill on his/her credit card at random. I believe that was in the thousands on food and alcohol alone, welcome to life in NYC.

I know $6K sounds like a lot, but I am kind of ashamed to admit that I used to blow close to that. It really is about the location and bottle service for a table of 5-10 people adds up really quick. It was a long time ago and I am a lot older, poorer and wiser? Now, I just need to sell this kid a few of my iPad apps.:D

If he's spending less than before, then he is better off.. And, according to your own link, he is. So, you're a moron.

He tapped “Yes,” almost without thinking. In less than a month of playing around two hours a day, he’d spent nearly a thousand dollars.

Lee stopped spending money on drinking roughly around the same time that he began playing Happy Kingdom, a Facebook game, with some friends. It was the first videogame he’d ever liked, and he became enraptured. He wound up spending nearly $5,000 in that game before trading it for Clash of Clans, but says that’s far less than what he would have otherwise spent on alcohol.

Sounds like cynical babby is crying a little too hard.

Yeah, a few $8 beers, and you're good to go!

I remember the looks of my fiances' friends when she busted out playing some phone game while we were out drinking haha.

I can drink a lot and if I was to spend over $300 on myself at a Vegas club ($20 a drink as a price check) I would be dead. I can't imagine what is being bought to spend $6000 between a small group of friends to rack that kind of bill up. Unless they are getting multiple $500+ tables at some trendy bar or club.

If he has the money sounds better to spend it on games to prolong his life than drinking enough to kill most people. Better to even stand on a sidewalk and throw the money at people at that point.
