Dear Mr. Botnet, look at the bright side, your comprehensive knowledge of backdooring things so that you can rent them out to other people gives you a little insight into how things are going to be for you over the next 30 months. :D

As well as going to prison for 30 months, Schichtel was also sentenced to a three-year supervised release programme that he will serve after leaving jail. The supervision will tightly control his access to computers and the net. In a brief statement about the case, the US Department of Justice said Schichtel pleaded guilty to one count of selling access to 72,000 machines that formed part of a bigger botnet he controlled.

Supervised release? That doesn't make sense... so they are going to use taxpayer money to have him consantly supervised for years? No way, so he can just get a laptop and drive around and grab some wifi somewhere or get a phone with a prepaid data plan.

Translation: The US gorvermnet hates competition, installing backdoors in everyone's devices is their job. /Probably a union job.

He has to be accepted by whateveriswatching him first for any purchasing of services and equipment.

Meh, it wouldn't be hard to obtain 'Net access for him.

which is why these people get cought not too long after they get out.

anyways thats what supervised it, they allow it, record the information and monitor it where you have zero privacy.

there was an article way back when, dude gave out his address and downloaded a bunch of raunchy porn.

I mean, what's stopping him from leaving the country once he's out of prison?

You know supervised release mean that you're passport is confiscated right? And often times you get the anklet that alerts the probation officers when you leave your house.

plus sometimes if determined you won't get a drivers liscence either.

once its all over he will still be watched but he can leave the country. Most of the time these internet crime types don't leave as they have zero idea how to survive in another eco system.

As easy as it is to sneak into this country, I can't imagine that it'd be too hard to sneak out of it, regardless of "supervision"

To sneak in most cross deserts on foot with a galon of water and a t-shirt around their head, or float on kenmoor fridges across an ocean hoping that the current will take them to a shore.

To get to another country other then mexico and canada they would need to be able to purchase a plane ticket.

drivers liscence and passport required.

Also you are supposed to migrate into canada if im not mistaken so he would be considered an illegal there and most likely deported back. But I don't know much about canucks migration laws.

So supervised release = house arrest? Methinks if he even gets an ankle bracelet, it won't restrict hiss ent but rather track it via GPS so they know if he's been in a location where there is say, free wifi, and there is a report of suspicious online activity going on there, they will know it was him.

Otherwise im guessings it's like a more high version of probation?

That's the thing, any person capable of running a bot net will have no problems procuring a notebook and wire driving connections. People are dumb the think that this guy is going to have some Hollywood style agency tailing him 24/7.

Dumb to think*

No ones tailing him. He will be low priority and probably will procure another one, if convicted again he will server more time.

Wire driving? You mean war driving? Otherwise, educate me.

And besides, it's not like he wouldn't be able to hide his location/ip online. That's a cakewalk for someone like this, he just wasn't on top of it before :p

And yea, Craigslist laptop + prepaid cell data plan. Good luck finding him. If he gets caught again he just gets fucked harder. IF

Doesn't taxpayer money keep prisons running? It seems to me that taxpayer money will be spent either way.

It was an obvious typo. :S
