Attention Californians, get your Amazon orders in before September 15th when the company starts collecting sales tax. Thanks to Lethal for the PSA of the day.

Depending on where they live, Californians pay 7.25% to 9.75% in sales taxes, so the savings are substantial — especially on big-ticket items such as electronics. But bargain hunters are also stocking up on inexpensive goods such as food, DVDs and carpet cleaner.

1000 jobs, in two cities...and guess what California thanks to your local reps, those cities (and the state), will only receive a "percentage" of the total sales tax paid. guess who gets the bulk.......Amazon.

So in essence you are paying more more for the product to increase the profit margin of Amazon, with very little infrastructure monetary input, which is what sales taxes are supposed to go to

In somewhat related news, most of the items in my Amazon cart have increased in price substantially.

amazon if they want great business, they should pay the tax for us like what some stores do to make their stuff tax free.

They should pay for my entire order, IMO. Seems unfair that they charge for stuff.

business still need to make a profit, paying for taxes they most likely still make a profit, just a smaller amount.

if they pass the tax to use, they make the same profit while we have to pay more.

Ouch trolled...

Also, a business that doesn't pass along the cost in taxes has probably just computed the tax prior to displaying the sales price, rolling it into what you pay so they don't soak up the cost. Retail profit margins are only a few pennies on the dollar (as is the case for the entire distribution channel if a product is competing with similar substitute goods) so a smaller profit margin isn't a realistic expectation from not paying taxes. That's more than likely just a sales gimmick to encourage you to select that retailer over another one that doesn't roll taxes into the sticker price.

$200 million in state revenue from taxes... sorry but 1000 jobs are not worth that. Besides I see more jobs opening up since Amazon has tried to keep out of California to avoid sales taxes now they have no reason to stay out. It's smart business to have distribution centers closer to huge population centers to reduce on delivery costs.

Wait Amazon gets to keep sales taxes not not give them to the state? How in the fuck is that even legal!? Are you absolutely sure about that?

Exactly. This is why MSRP is inflated. Businesses need room to toy around with to present "sales".

California resident and Prime member. I don't think this is really going to change much for me.

I already pay tax at Newegg and Monoprice and I still seem to come out ahead of local retail and
I regulary pay a little more for a product on Amazon so I'll have it delivered to my house and not have to deal with going to Target, Walmart,BestBuy or any number of places that may or may not have what I need.

Now when I get a big ticket item like a TV I'll probably look to places that still don't charge tax but other than that unless something changes in the local retail stores I still will not be shopping local.

where's all the tax loving socialists who pop up in other threads here?

How is taxation socialist?

Americans paying taxes dates back to just after the Revolutionary War (post 1783). How else could our early formed country have paid for its military to overthrow the British? I don't see how my stating that makes me a "tax loving socialist." Chill.

Taxes in CA help pay for government services such as Medi-Cal which provides medical care to low income families, seniors, the disabled, and other classes of people. Yes, the government doesn't spend all of our money wisely (look at our deficit), but its sustainability exists largely because it collects taxes.

Don't get me wrong, I have loved paying no tax on Amazon orders. I tried to order everything I could from them, including PC parts. But we all knew this was coming.

I think you need to look up the definition of socialism. In a true socialist state, income tax is basically eliminated due to government ownership of land/resources and the revenue earned by its leasing of the said land/resources is sufficient to sustain the state. Nevertheless, today, it is still an element of states that are considering socialist leaning (i.e., France). But it's also an element of pretty much every government. They couldn't provide services, pay for the military, or fund programs like NASA without tax dollars. Again, how does being rational about the topic make someone a "tax loving socialist"? Chill.

Maybe he's a slave loving anti-abolitionist that expects our countries infrastructure to be built for free, I'm just saying

Hrm. My prime membership expires right around then... To renew or not to renew... I ordered a lot of stuff from Amazon because I didn't have to pay sales tax.

I didn't say that taxation was socialist, I said where are the tax loving socialists.
Your eloquent post hopped right over what I was saying. I understand socialism.

Oh, and don't kid yourself the common man will get no benefit from Amazon being taxed.

I hope they compensate some way. Lower costs of shipping, or include all items for free super saver shipping. Otherwise on many products they will no longer be priced competitively. :(

This sucks, might not renew my amazon prime. Large orders are going to cost a lot more.

This is the tired old liberal argument that if you're not for higher taxes then you shouldn't use the roads. Yes this is the Intarwebs but that doesn’t mean we can’t have an intellectually honest conversation on the role of government in our society.

Nobody, not even the Libertarians are anti-road! People need to stop pulling this out of their butt every time someone wants to pay lower taxes.

Government has a place and purpose, I happen to think it’s keeping our citizens safe, helping out those that truly lack the ability to provide for themselves, protecting our borders and providing infrastructure which includes roads. This is why we pay taxes and this is where big government versus small government people disagree.

Here in Cali, the Dems in the Senate and the Assembly are saying if they could just raise more taxes then we would be in the current financial crysis. BULLSHIT! We have a corruption and a spending problem that need to be addressed first. We currently have this unpopular “High Speed Rail” project that voters were lied to about. It’s looking to cost anywhere from 65 to 85 BILLION dollars and this is going on right now in the middle of this crysis. Cities across California are filing bankruptcy or are on the verge of it but the baboons in the Capitol Building are all about this boondoggle.

I think it’s fair to say that I don’t want to pay more in taxes when we have some the highest taxes in the country, a government on the verge of bankruptcy, rampant overspending and mass corruption. At this point higher taxes just adds fuel to the fire and makes the problem worse.

I guess that means I shouldn't use the roads:rolleyes:

Time to short Amazon's stock. Crap like this will drive people back to B&M.

Dude, but how else will Johnny learn about lesbians in kindergarten if the corrupt CA government doesn't throw money away?

Near me the big project was the BIG DIG. Billions of dollars over budget while corrupt politicians gave contracts to their croney friends.

Now we have a leaky tunnel that killed one person already due to shoddy construction.

Same state wants in state tuition for illegal immigrants.

But still people like those in this thread will try to rationalize and excuse the excesses of abuse in the name of their liberal "ideals".

I've found buying puts easier than selling short but in this case I don’t think it’s going to affect them much if at all.

Nothing about this is forcing more taxes on you. Cali is incentivizing more business for Amazon in the state while having them collect sales tax. This will be done legally as Amazon will have a real presence in the state.

Time to short Amazon's stock. Crap like this will drive people back to B&M.

No, it will not. Here in my area of King County WA, we have a higher sales tax than almost anywhere in CA and Amazon is doing fine. One might say that they are even based here and proliferating at a very healthy pace.

I think the problem is that you're so off topic that you're not even arguing the same thing. California residents already pay sales tax. This isn't a new tax levied to force liberal backed abortions on you or to build "work camps" to force you into when the state elects a new Stalin.

I know it's an election year, but get a grip.

How is this legal anyways. I thought you only get charged sales tax if the company has a base of operations or warehouse or similar in the state.

You're correct, I wasn't specifically referring to Amazon charging sales tax and for that I'm off topic

I'm talking about November initiative to raise taxes and I'm talking about Darrell Steinberg pleading Californians to give them a super majority so the Democrats can raise taxes.

Dude, don’t get mad.

I was replying to a post claiming someone was pro slavery and anti road because they didn’t want to pay a tax.

I live in this POS State, as soon as I can get out I will change that.

CA is bankrupt, Cap and Tax goes into effect in January, bend over CA residents you are going to get the whole nine yards.

They do not manage any money they get, tax tax tax, spend spend spend.

CA wants to put a gps device in your car and tax you by the mile. Their answer for too many electric and high fuel milage cars.

In Central CA unemployment is at 40%, they cut off the water to farmers to save the guppies.

They insist on building a mega billion dollar train to nowhere.

CA is now a one party state, but then so is Hawaii, both are screwed up.

We have two AHole Legislators from San Fran who want to confiscate any gun with a detachable magazine. Assault Weapons. (Ye and Hill)

F this State and all the Pinko Commie incompetents that run it, it can not fall into the Ocean fast enough. It used to be a great place to live, no more.

People just like to take really strange detour when these things come up to prove some sort of point. It will continue in this thread; people ranting about taxes even though there really isn't much to rant about in the OP.

Crap like this will drive people back to B&M.

Not really. I often times would prefer to get stuff at a B&M store but I don't for the following:

1) They don't carry what I want.
2) Customer service is terrible.
3) Often means I have to drive hours to find what I want.
4) Easier to shop online than trying to find something hidden on the shelves.
5) Prices are too high.

This just means I will buy less stuff in general. A $250 video card purchase will turn into a $200 video card purchase, or none at all.

I've found buying puts easier than selling short but in this case I don’t think it’s going to affect them much if at all.

I don't know, I think it will affect people's buying habits. If BB and Amazon have a TV for the same price, then people will have little incentive to buy from Amazon if they can just pick it from a few miles away at BB (or substitute another electronics B&M store, such as Fry's), even if Amazon is offering free shipping.

Or Amazon will have to get even more aggressive w/ pricing to make sure that even after tax and shipping are account for, they're still cheaper than B&M options. That will still hurt their bottom line.

I'd like to compare this year's profit and revenue to next year's profit revenue for Amazon. I have a feeling it'll be less.

It's pretty rare I find something cheaper in a brick and mortar store these days, sales tax or no. There is more overhead in a retail environment, even when taking into account that warehouse workers get paid quite a bit more than your average retail worker.

Tax Tax Tax Tax Tax...

I already paid 35% of my salaries on freaking income tax, and now asking for tax on the product that I purchase?

Where is all these taxes spending on?

Like you said, for low income where they just suck up all the benefits and not looking for a job. I have seen way too many of people that are like that, and this is where most of our taxes are.
The whole entire system is broken, and the tax money are not going into the right place.

If Amazon starting to charge tax, I am just going to ship stuff to Oregon and redirect the package back to California.

I ain't mad :p

For me the topic all along was taxation.

I am adamantly against people being taxed more than once on the same income. Also against being taxed over and over again on things they already own.

Oh, and I don't give a shit about the election.
