The President of the United States made history yesterday and also made Reddit’s day by dropping in for a half hour Q&A, doing a Reddit “Ask Me Anything”. His appearance drew more than 200k visitors asking live questions, frequently bringing the site to a crawl in the process. The President managed to answer 10 questions in the half hour he had to spend; most notable was his response to for support of Internet freedom.

Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody – from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business

Really shows the limitations the non-scalable languages these sites use.

Groundbreaking stuff... Really taking on the issues that matter!
"How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?"
"Who's your favourite Basketball player?"
"What is the first thing you'll do on November 7th, win or lose?"
"What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?"
"What's the recipe for the White House's beer?"

I'm surprised no one asked what his favorite color was...

He had 30 minutes to tackle questions and the site was down for a good chunk of that time. Just sayin'.

Those questions can be answered with one sentence as well. I gave up trying to login to ask my question about mandatory mortgage principal reduction legislation that he probably wouldn't have answered anyways.

What's the old joke again, How can you tell when a politician is lying? His lips are moving. Guess it needs to be updated to his user name has words after it.

Anyone else remember acta, pippa and Obama wanting an internet kill switch?

Which of those you mention were actually proposed by the Executive branch?

I heard an apt term a few minutes ago: "low information voter." All the things he repeated were messages perfectly received and repeated. :p

By Internet Freedom, he means "Internet Freedom, but big brother will secretly be watching you, but don't worry, you won't see him leaning over your shoulder".

Great free-dum.

People did ask important questions but no politician or more likely, his obedient minions, would answer anything that would make the media go full retard and possibly cost him votes. Haven't found a president worth voting for since I was able. Can't believe people still take this republican/democratic rhetoric seriously. It is all horse shit. Thems with the gold and bombs make the rules and the middle class chumps like me are too comfortable to hit the streets with pitchforks and torches. I can say with confidence our country's infrastructure is in a rapid state of decay. Just wait until the power, food, and medicine stops flowing.

I am disappointed. Not many people had the balls or took the time to troll the potus. An opportunity like this doesn't come around often.

Someone did ask him if he had a cat. :D

Further proving that retards who sit on forums like reddit all day are retarded liberals. There is a reason why liberals get mocked for insignificant stupid shit a la 99%er's, anonymous, crapping on a US flag, etc.. etc..

He is betting the farm that enough idiots and ignorant voters, along with all the voter fraud, will send him on to his second term. Truth doesn't matter, issues don't matter, it's all a popularity contest. Sadly it worked last time, hopefully enough people have pulled their heads out this time. We shall see...

In true reddit fashion: repost! And he used my repost to get to the front page! :p lol

Reddit was down for a majority of the 30 mins he was online. I'm surprised he even got to answer those 10 questions. It was still having traffic problems hours afterwards

I'll repost the summary of the questions from the reddit comments:

Here is a collection of all the questions and answers:
-
Question:
I am recent law school graduate. Despite graduating from a top school, I find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future knowing that my ability to live a productive life -- to have a fulfilling career, to buy a house, to someday raise a family -- is hampered by my debt and the bleak economic outlook for young people. I know that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?

Answer:
I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right - your long term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're twenty six. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle class jobs - and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth - more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged - we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more.

-
Question:
What's the recipe for the White House's beer?

Answer:
It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.

-
Question:
What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?

Answer:
Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.

-
Question:
What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?

Answer:
The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead - so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget.

-
Question:
What is the first thing you'll do on November 7th, win or lose?

Answer:
Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard - especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices.

-
Question:
How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? and what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014?

Answer:
We've really focused on this since I came into office - 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage.

-
Question:
Who's your favourite Basketball player?

Answer:
Jordan - I'm a Bulls guy.

-
Question:
We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom. Is Internet Freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform?

Answer:
Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody - from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although there will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle - and it will be reflected in the platform.

-
Question:
Are you considering increasing funds to the space program?

Answer:
Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level - so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight.

-
Question:
How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?

Answer:
It's hard - truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store - so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm - even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER - if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!

1/2 hour = jack sh#&.

Even if I knew he was going to do this, I wouldn't have bothered showing up. "Dedicating" a half-hour is paramount to a smile and wave from a parade car, or a handshake while patting a baby on the head.

Just there for show.

You didn't really think anything meaningful was going to happen, did you?

EDIT: On the flip side, some better questions would have helped too.

Retarded liberals you say?

Why is it that conservatives can never get their story straight? Are we all a bunch of retards, or are we a bunch of elitist intellectuals? In American politics, only one side has attempted to paint intellectualism as a bad thing. Only one side has consistently pandered to idiots with self-contradictory claims, straw men, and appeals to emotion. Only one side has constantly attacked science with religious bullshit again and again.

Hint: it's not the liberals...wherever they are in American politics, with the Democrats vs. Republicans being a contest between moderate conservatives and extreme conservatives.

Clearly the country will be better with Romney in charge. Clearly.

This is exactly the kind of thoughtless, idiotic responses I've come to expect from your side. Good job.

Leave the political rhetoric out of this thread. You want politics, go watch the convention or log into the Soapbox, but not here.

I'm not sure how you expect a thread about the President posting on Reddit to end up free of political rhetoric...

If it truly were a popularity contest, the current state of country would be much better because George W. would be nothing more than a footnote in history. He lost the popular vote in 2000.

You do realize that things could be worse, right? Worse as in the unemployment rate BEFORE Obama was elected president? Worse as the economy and the state of the stock market BEFORE he was elected?

Hell, I was irritated that the Health Care reform didn't go nearly as far as I was hoping (screw all of you 'cry socialist' asshats out there, universal health care is a good thing), but at least when it is fully enacted, I know some people that will finally be able to get insurance again, or could get tested for a genetic disease that would prevent them from ever being insurable.

I got an idea, how about instead of general complaints with no facts to back it up, you try to offer solutions that would actually work, or provide the solutions the Republicans have been trying. Because if you haven't noticed, they've been reluctant to vote on anything that might possibly portray Obama in a positive light, including voting against bills they themselves wrote (DREAM act, anyone?)

Or Obamacare...what, with it being the Republican health care proposal in the '90s offered as a countersolution to Clinton's attempts at health care reform...

You do realize that things could be worse, right?

Sure they could be worse, especially if everying Obama wanted had been implimented. Lucky there where enough Democrats who where smart enough not to vote for what Obama wanted.

Worse as in the unemployment rate BEFORE Obama was elected president?

Don't you mean the unemployment rate after the Democrats took control of the house and senate?
The first 6 years under Bush and the Republicans the unemployment rate averaged under 5.3 %, much better than we've seen since.

Worse as the economy and the state of the stock market BEFORE he was elected?

The stock market peak under Bush and the Republicans at 14,198 in 2007, still waiting for the peak under Obama or the Democrats to hit that high.

Not far enough? Universal health care is fine if you are one of the elites who gets to move to the front of the line. For everyone else just be sure to die quietly while you wait your turn to be denign care.

You mean like pass a budget? Something the Republican congress has done, yet the Democratic Senate has NOT done for 4 years. As for Obama's budget, when it was brought to a vote, it was so bad, not one single Democrat would even vote for it.

Stick to the article and don't get off topic or this will be moved to the GenMay Soapbox to join the ongoing thread there.

As always, incredible to witness the level of political discourse on this forum.

It always happens in a sausage fest silly!

You should have known anything remotely political results in a... well not argument, since in an argument one side has to listen to another... maybe, a bitchfest. Yes, I believe that is the technical term.

Response to the OP, I think it was cool that he did it, but he took the easy questions and the ones that were remotely interesting he didn't even try to go into any detail, which makes this a worthless attention grab.

You really live up to your username. Apparently you've never been to a hospital in France, the UK, or even Canada. Hell even Cuba's universal healthcare implementation is better overall than the USA's healthcare. In every forum I've been on where the state of healthcare in the US comes up, citizens or expats of the countries I mentioned all agree that healthcare is better in their home country.

Universal health care is fine if you are one of the elites who gets to move to the front of the line.

Bwahahah if that were even true, then why would you complain? That's exactly the way the current US healthcare system already is. You've got someone like Steve Jobs who registered himself on liver transplant lists in all 50 states because he could fly there on a whim. He could pay for his own transplant with the best surgeons in the world out of pocket too.

The fact is, if you go to the emergency room in Canada for a broken finger, yeah you're going to be waiting there awhile. If you go in suffering from chest pains, you're going to be taken care of immediately. And you know what won't happen after you leave the hospital? You won't be bankrupted by the bills incurred. You're ignorant and sheltered, living up to the stereotypes so many foreigners have about US citizens.

You sir, of all people, have no right to talk about idiocy or ignorance if you honestly think that in-person voter fraud plays any role in our elections.

New Nationwide Study of Election Fraud Since 2000 Finds Just 10 Cases of In-Person Voter Fraud

By the way, the new voter ID laws that are being implemented around the country always have a disproportionate impact on people who are the most likely to vote Democratic. This includes the young, the old, the poor, and minorities, especially blacks.

The Republicans are willing to keep hundreds of thousands of people from voting so that a handful of people do not vote illegally. This is not a mistake. This is not an accident. This is not a coincidence. This is a deliberate attempt to keep certain members of our society from having a voice.

Politicians all love to say that they care SO MUCH about freedom.

What counts is their voting record, and Obama's isn't very good... Romney either, so we are screwed. Should have supported Ron Paul, oh well.
