Microsoft’s Skydrive may be cloud based, but whoever makes policy for Skydrive really has their head in the clouds if they think banning any and all nudity from being stored on Skydrive makes a wise business model. It’s really difficult to deny the profusion of nudity on the web or the probability that the majority of users have some degree of nudity on their computers. No Manga or cartoon depicted nudity? Wow, just wow.

Microsoft has stated in its EULA that users cannot upload "nudity of any sort, including full or partial human nudity, or nudity in nonhuman forms such as cartoons, fantasy art or manga" in their SkyDrive account.

It's probably a CYA thing for Microsoft. Doubt they're really going to be digging for through your files to find nudity.

Yet one of the many reasons I would never put my personal data on the cloud. You do not have control over what's on it. Not that I have any nudity on my network but it's the principle that's wrong. It also means that they actually go through everybody's files.

It makes sense that Microsoft would want to avoid getting into a situation where people are just using their service as a mass respiratory for large medai files they might not want on their personal machine.

Good way to keep a sizable chunk of the artistic community away from your service.

Nudity != sexual.

not really sure i'm a fan of the idea that there's a robust enough inspection process that they can identify the nature of the files to begin with.

Prohibiting porn will help them reduce costs. MS wants lots of users, but not heavy users.

Porn, along with pirated materials, creates heavy users. Now, MS has a ready excuse to ban these users.

Won't last long. Someone will purposely upload artistic nudes specifically to get them removed, go to court and sue.

Doubt it. If it's made pretty clear in the TOS that you can't have nudity the only real defense would be that you don't call it nudity. Besides, I doubt MS are going to go after random artists uploading a few artistic nudes, they'll be looking more for the people uploading many gigs of porn.

ren porn.rar pagefile.sys

Funnily enough, the only operating system stupid enough for that to work is Windows. In linux even if you rename the file extension to something else it'll still be recognised as images/videos and be able to bring up a thumbnail of what it really is.

not if its a passworded rar file too

I actually remember a few years back when some government agency was talking about a system they could use to scan your system for kiddie porn and people legitimately thought it was stupid because offenders could just rename it from kiddie_porn.jpg to flowers_and_bunnies.dat as if that would somehow fool the system :p

It's all about file headers ofcourse, not extensions. I was just making a joke with the rename thing, though i'm sure some people have actually done it and had success. :D

why not, they can do face recognition in images, why not body recognition, sure they can find alot of it easily with certain angles like straight on and so on...

ren porn.rar pagefile.sys

I can't believe Windows still uses pagefiles.

Also, you can expect these policies to extend to the Windows 8 "App Store". No art for you because of the bible-thumping fundamentalists that run the United States.

In all fairness against the big brother accusation, this is probably about being able to stop kiddie porn. Banning it all is easier than defining it and then having to enforce it. Especially when someone is going to be stuck with the job of working on reviewing that crap. I can see it being a problem because the different laws and definitions between countries and the pervs will take any opportunity to stretch your definition. And now your service is in high profile litigation as a hoster of kiddie porn. I can see where it is easier to just ban it all.

So... they have someone looking at user account folders day-to-day for pornographic material?

Well then...

The solution too all this cloud crap is to make Truecrypt capable of mounting containers in cloud storage.

Don't let your subjective experience pollute the general populace. Do you have facts to back up your disgusting theories? This is like an alcoholic stating that, because they hang out in bars, the majority of the population drinks. In fact, they don't. Over 50% of Americans have never picked up a drink.

Just because you have a TB of porn stashed away doesn't mean everyone else does.

This is just a CYA thing most likely, as others have noted ... in our modern times people tend to sue everyone when something happens ... so this way if there was someone engaging in child porn or unauthorized distribution of someone's image the victims could sue the person who uploaded the images but not MS for being the image location (since the person violated MS rules by putting the image on their servers) ... as others have also noted, I doubt MS will actually check the images themselves but is using this strictly as liability protection in the case of civil lawsuits ;) ... besides with No Such Agency already reading everyone's files and emails there is no need for MS to do it :D

This is so they can ban accounts that exploit the free nature of it as a hosting site for smut. There is nothing preventing from people responsibly using it privately for their own perversions.

Well if it's in their TOS, you can always go someplace else.

You are right..most of us don't bother storing we just search on an as needed basis. :D

all know porn pics have a digital pattern to it. the computer will scan for patterns of the same make . or digital finger prints . you can put a line or spot in photo computer cant tell the differents.

This will only protect Microsoft in the end. A user could upload a ton of very personal nudity images. Somehow, the users account gets accessed by an outside source. Images hit the internet & the user is furious. I'll say that they are playing it safe.

So Cloud purveyor's being selective about what data YOU store in the cloud.... how would they even know unless they are snooping on your data?:confused::mad:

Yet another in the infinite reasons to never ever get involved with Cloud nonsense, period.

Worst "Rent Seeking" brain fart in tech history, tell the Cloud to go fuck itself.

I doubt that MSFT would do any checking...sounds more like they are just trying to protect themselves incase kiddy shit gets uploaded (not to mention having a reason to ban people who use large amounts of space/bandwidth).

However why you would ever store your porn in the cloud is beyond me...
