How many people like this idea?

For example, a query containing the word "Amazon" would pull emails with shipping information sent by the online retailer. Such Gmail results will typically be shown to the right of the main results, though in some instances, the top of the search page will highlight an answer extracted directly from an email. For example, the request "my flight" will show specific airline information imported from Gmail. Something similar could eventually happen when searching for a restaurant reservation or tickets to a concert.

it looks like it's tied to one's own gmail account rather than just coughing everyone's email contents onto the web

Evil.

Wait until Google gets into healthcare. Everyone will care once your prostate or gyno exam shows up in search results...

Surprised Google wants to get that confusing with their search functions; a company who made it big by being simple and straight-forward. If I do a Google search and one of my emails turns up, I'll probably always be a little annoyed and concerned. Let alone less technically-inclined people who don't understand personalized searching.

Also, this means letting someone on my computer even less. Rather than just make sure they don't open my gmail window, I have to make sure they don't do what is probably the most common task people do when they borrow a computer: google search.

Then again, since going public they no longer cater to their users* but rather to their stakeholders who only care about profits.

* We're not customers, but rather users/product. Customers are the entities filling 96% of Google's balance sheet with advertising revenues.

If this happens.. I am setting up my own email server again and nuking my gmail account.

It's the exact same as searching your own gmail just displayed on another of Google's domains. How is this a problem for you again? No privacy breaches what so ever, just a more helpful search engine that already is paired with gmail. Pretty much status quo.

Me too. Well, I already killed my primary gmail account I had for 5-6 years six months ago. I was going to do exactly that but got lazy and just remade a new gmail account for now (still better, less crap emails coming in, used a generic name, etc) after needing a gmail account for the google play and stuff but I definitely want to setup my own server soon. Main problem is I need to build a energy efficient always on computer first.

Soon enough...

I know a lot of people think this stuff (data mining) these companies do is not that intrusive/malicious but it sure feels like it to me. I wish someone with the power to do so would make it so every single file kept on them was brought forth to shed some light on how deep it actually goes.

I feel like they (NSA, FBI, Dr. Oz, etc) can just see every website I've ever visited with the click of a mouse. I'm just not feeling it is fair to people in general. Shit, I'm forgetful, so they will end up knowing more about me than I do soon enough.

Because when I need to search my email I can just search my email. When I'm searching online I'm not looking for stuff in my emails. Why are they doing it again?

Creepy Uncle Google is working hard to keep his toes right on the line between "kinda weird" and "OMFG you stalker psycho" as usual.

Uh isn't is obvious? Because why have two ways to search? Why not just return the information you're looking for?

Isn't it obvious? I literally already explained why...lol. Also (with that mentality), why not just have one drawer on your dresser and keep everything in it, why have multiple drawers?

OMG Anon! Don't even ask that question! Socks do not ever mingle with athletic wear which in turn is never allowed to be in the same drawer as night wear!! How could you?! :(

If you been on the Internet and had Gmail this long, you're already shit on anyway.

Just ride the slope all the way down, there's no turning back, we're done for.

Seriously its just a personal search option which you can disable, what the fuck is everyone bitching about this time?

Who said a search engine must search only the interwebs over port 80 and 443??

No other search engine actually offers up relevant data and no other company actively attempts to better the Internet through usable applications and new technologies. We finally get a tech friendly company that secures their stuff has clean and fast systems; and everyone tries to find some little thing to get mad at.

Go on, switch over to using a self installed copy of sendmail or god forbid the new toys-r-us outlook shit.

Oh you want to use yahoo, good luck shifting through those ads and hoping your company stays afloat.

Well then theres MS, always late to the party and usually doing it poorly and without any care for user interfaces or security.

Whatever, I digress the Internet is just pissing me off today. Everyone is so retarded.

Google isn't making the Internet better. They're a corporate entity that's publically traded. Their objective is to generate as much profit as possible and come out ahead of any competition. Any other idea is a deluded misrepresentation of why a corporation does business.

If you truly believe that then you know nothing about the company. Their research into the Internet alone is worth their profit margins. They are single handedly developing the HTTP/2.0 standard soon to be adopted and are attempting to research more into high speed data links. Sure they make money, but is that a bad thing? We are all capitalist here. We work to make money to do the things we love, Google does the same. They have open projects, care about their employees, and do a nice job not suing anyone. There are very few companies out there with an actual good culture.

There must exist at least a few people on this planet that aren't total greedy assholes right?

Google's certainly made the internet better. If you don't believe that, you weren't around when the web was in its infancy.

The faithful belief in statements released to the media, the only things we know about Google, do not shed any light on internal communications between employees or the thoughts of their shareholders. Ultimately, those that sit on the board, the ones who have invested in the company, put money on the line with the expectation that their investment would yeild a return. There is no other reason to invest and the shareholders ultimately decide the direction and goals of the company.

Just use two different browsers. One for Google searches without being signed in and the second for Gmail. Problem solved.

Or one browser, but in incognito mode or a second profile (both Chrome and Firefox support multiple profiles at least)

shhh, no logic allowed, cause then [H] would have to stop using miss-leading subjects and people may actually have to READ an article before posting!!

but people rather post blindly and not have a clue....

This going to be sweet. People are going to fly off the handle without actually reading, like just about every other Google article.

- They aren't making your email publicly searchable or lumping it in with their regular indexing. If you believe they are, you should be institutionalized for First Degree Stupidity. They are basically just combining two search boxes into one.

- It doesn't present additional security risks. If someone can access your Google account, they can access your Gmail already.

- Optional.

In short, there is nothing new here except maybe a bit more clutter on your search screen assuming you even turn the feature on. But hey, don't let that stop you from bouncing off the walls in your rubber rooms.

hahaha, great point! totally forgot that someone can just click on the Gmail button at the top of the screen if they want to peruse your emails

Oops, I forgot to comment on the actual news.

Personally, I agree with AnonymousUser about the usefulness of having multiple drawers in your dresser to keep things better organized and separated. In a practical sense, I suspect this feature is going to cause problems for families who use the same user account on the same computer for multiple users, on occasions when Dad forgets to log out of his porno gmail account or something like that.

Is this not an "opt in" type thing anyway? So most people won't even bother to opt in at all so won't have to worry about it? Some people on various forums freaked out initially as well and then had to retract when they realized you had to turn it on, not take action to opt out.

Google's certainly made the internet better. If you don't believe that, you weren't around when the web was in its infancy.

I was around before the web was born. Google has made the internet better...but we need to stop and look at the invoice once in a while, and make sure we are happy with what we are paying.

You could also just not make an account with Google. Bing search has gotten a lot better in the past six months. After I started using it, I had to turn to Google once in a while to get useful results. That's not really the case nowadays.

OMG NO! Google is offering a service that is OPT-IN only! Holy shit! The Internet is crashing! They are the definition of evil!

Not a big gmail user. But, when I'm logged into a youtube or gmail, doesn't access to my gmail time out, even though I would still show being logged in. I pretty sure yahoo works this way as well as hotmail. You stay logged in until you access something considered secure and then they re-prompt you.

So you have to actively logout of gmail now to be secure instead of assuming the gmail portion times out.

What does this mean for Android where you're nagged prettymuch until you have an always logged in gmail account.

Isn't it obvious? I literally already explained why...lol. Also (with that mentality), why not just have one drawer on your dresser and keep everything in it, why have multiple drawers?

Some people have things in some drawers they don't want others to know about :)
