Surprisingly absent from this list of ways to "stay safe in the cloud" is the "do not use it" option. That was simple and it only took one (non) step. :D

So what should you do to avoid being another one of these smart people to whom a bad thing could easily happen? You shouldn't allow yourself to be a lightning rod in the middle of the cloud. Sorry. The cheesy line was irresistible — but true. Perhaps not every single incident which occurred in the last week could've been prevented, but the risk of it could've been significantly lowered if the users took a couple of precautions.

Do any [H] members have experience creating a private dropbox like service for their own nas or server? I've looked at ownCloud but haven't tried it out. Looking for suggestions.

Since most cloud services have API's. Has anyone developed alternative applications (say for Dropbox) that automatically encrypt/decrypt (if you have a stored password on a machine with the app) files before it puts/pulls them from the cloud? You wouldn't be able to use their webapp to access your files, but at least you know the data is useless to them.

It'd seem like a decent idea and rather simple. It'd just slip in an encryption/decryption process during the sync.

Who needs to brute-force when you can just DDoS the server and play login-info piñata?
