AT&T is finally addressing a problem that is only going to get worse if steps aren’t taken. AT&T is fitting areas of heavy crowd density such as arenas, convention centers, airports and stadiums with what is called Distributed Antenna Systems, basically a fancy way of referring to a radius of antennas around the area. The system will be able to accommodate other participating carriers, not just AT&T.

The basic idea is to break up the service into smaller bite-sized chunks that are easier for the network to handle. The DAS works by splitting the area that needs additional coverage into multiple zones, ranging from a dozen up to multiple dozens, depending on the density of the population.

They need a real free DAS solution for home use. The 3G Microcells are BS.

They've done this in a lot of places in Atlanta already. It will help voice get out, but almost nothing for data when there's a crowd. Ask almost anyone with AT&T if data is usable at Turner Field or malls like The Mall of Ga when the mall is packed. It's just a halfassed band-aid to the real problem, sites having inadequate backhaul to handle special events.
