Self-Destructing Solid State Drive

It's a chinese company, it doesn't have to make sense. Can you imagine the virus of the future? :D

Or, you could just use a cheap SSD with encryption, rather than having to constantly replace the drive every time someone new walks into the room and pushes the red button while asking "what's this?"

So, what happens if your power is cut before you try to use the destruct function?

Cut the RED wire! XD. Oh, don't leave those cords out in the open for random people to wonder about.

You do as it was done in this comic http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_362.php DMFA #362 aka Big Red Button

I would change the button to maybe having to need two buttons pushed at the same time to work.

Whats wrong with her voice lol

It looks like they dubbed over the original audio track. It could be for any number of reasons, but it sure looks strange, like an old kung fu movie ... protect your SSD from ninja invasion!:D

I'm not impressed. Call me when someone packs a little thermite into the ssd.

This would be better off for spindle drives. The purpose of this is more or less to destroy porn and mostly piracy if the FBI, CIA, RIAA etc walks in. That stuff is usually stored on large raid arrays. :p

Her voice is awesome too. Especially the way she says "I don't think it's going to work again!" So priceless.

LOL!!! The fact that she had to step away from the fake smoke was funny. Yeah, this will go over well getting on a plane. Good luck with that. Oh wait.

Sold im buying 3 and if he riaa trys to sue me i am pushing the the red buttons.

I wasn't aware SSDs retained data post format. If all the switches go on/off then they're just plain on/off.

That'll win you an obstruction of justice conviction as well as a presumption of guilt that you really did download those crappy tunes the RIAA has pinned to your IP address.

I think this is a joke. The green button removes the data without any danger of anyone being able to retrieve it. So, what's the point of a physical-destruct button?

If this were real, I would suspect lithium-ion batteries are used, so that the drive can be fried without external power. If no batteries, it would only work if the computer is turned on.

And, of course, of the cops bust down your door when you're not home, there will be no one to push the button to protect your data.

This is a really, really dumb device. This is why:

http://.com/our-reviews/tcs-galatea-ultra-rugged-240gb-slc-ssd-review/

The TCS Galatea has a similar function, but it has a special connector. You can send a signal to the Galatea via that connector, and it performs a secure erase which wipes all of the data in less than one second.

My point is, you don't need to destroy a perfectly good piece of hardware for no good reason. If your goal is to wipe the data on the drive, just do that instead. I hate to see good technology getting destroyed like that. :/

That's a good point. If you can simply build the controller to tell every bit to simultaneously move to 0 or 1 with a pushbutton the data is GONE in less than 1 second.

If you want to make it more reliable, then you do make sure a tiny battery is present in the drive to do this by pushbutton. AND a small piezo speaker to provide an obvious auditory noise when the button is pushed so you KNOW it wiped the drive.

As a separate function curcuit, that's more than adequate.

Want to make an industrial-grade version of this? Make sure there are redundant batteries in the case, and dual buttons to wipe. Both external hookup and another on the drive case itself.

That's pretty cool. This is a black hat's dream come true. I'd like to know how long the surge takes to crumble the chips in the way the video demonstrated.

First thing I thought of was the scene in MiB when K asks J "Kid, you see the red button?"

Never, never press the red button.

Not possibly, sadly. It works by throwing away the privatekey on the controller. And who knows, that might be retrievable somehow.

It reminded me of Crysis when they vaporized the guy hanging in the tree. I also thought It should be called the 'let the smoke out button'.

You either didnt watch the video or just dont understand what you saw. The flash memory chips where destroyed. Replace anything you want but if it actually worked as advertised 100% of the time your scenario is 100% impossible.

CSI miami will be able to recover the drive after self destruct :p

When the chips were fried, copies of the bits of data were burned to the plastic casing of the chips. And, with this camera and the "enhance image" button, we're able to see those bits of data and record them.

You can actually see the 0s and 1s INSIDE the broken chips!
