NVIDIA and Intellectual Ventures today announced that they have jointly acquired a set of patents developed and owned by IPWireless. The portfolio comprises approximately 500 patents granted and pending in the wireless communications area, including essential concepts in LTE, LTE-Advanced and 3G/4G technologies.

Terms of the acquisition, which closed on April 30, 2012, were not disclosed. Ownership of the patents was split between NVIDIA and IV, with NVIDIA licensing the rights to those patents that it did not acquire. As part of the acquisition, IPWireless retains perpetual, royalty-free access to these patents.

Nvidia gains access to wireless patents. How exactly does this benefit their existing product lines or areas of development. Frankly, I can't see how it does help nvidia, unless these patents were acquired to help nvidia going forward with SoC development for mobile integrated devices.

maybe they want to license it and use that as passive revenue to diversify their business?

Personally I can't see much sense in dumping a bunch of money on what's bound to be a long term payoff when the company is floundering now.

Future versions of the Tegra SoC with modems onboard?

They already bought a modem company and are working on a Tegra LTE chip. These patents are probably just to protect against lawsuits from other chip makers. (Like how google bought motorola).
