Beware of All-in-One ATM Skimmers

Great, now you pretty much have to vandalize ATMs just to be safe.
Try explaining to the nice officer that you were beating on the ATM to make sure there wasn't an all in one card reader attched to it.

Looks like these folks put more effort into stealing other peoples money than it would take to get a real job.

Cause right now, getting a real job is quite difficult.

I disagree. There is always an excuse for why people can't be responsible for their actions or their situation. If you steal from other people, you are scum and will never be considered an adult.

The stuff in my sig is when I do side work like fixing computers and cars on weekends. I make more money that way then actually working.

I don't get it. Are you advocating ATM skimming, or just complaining about the economy? It looks like you live in Florida, is the job market really that bad?

He didn't advocate anything, all he said was that they put more effort into this than getting a job. The next guy said that getting a job was tough.

EDIT: Actually you said that, and he said the pay was shit. I hardly think that is advocating theft.

The pay isn't good here in Florida. You're better off owning a business or working for some State agency.
Most places underpay because they know people need jobs. On top of that, the cost of living exceeds many peoples income.

No he is saying he makes more money on side jobs than his real full time employment. Not that hard to understand...

Wow, that is so sneaky. Guess I better start looking at ATMs closer when I use it too.

I got that, turbo. All I said was that these people need to get jobs, then folks started whining about jobs being hard to get or poor paying. That's either not terribly relevant to the newspost, or somewhat aplogist for thieving.

If you don't use ATMs that aren't at your bank and you know what those ATMs are supposed to look like you've defeated 90% of skimming scams. Most of these devices end up on the third party ATMs they put in casinos and convenience stores and frankly you're an idiot for using those in the first place. Having half a brain and not sticking your card into strange slots is half the battle.

Because it's easier to steal than to hold down a real job.
If they do get caught, it's usually just a slap on the wrist, or an early release due to "jail overcrowding"
Plus, if the victim tries to defend themselves, they will end up in jail instead of the crook.

avoid ATMs as much as possible, heck void debit as much possible. Credit actually provides reward incentives and better fraud protection. The few times you need cash go in a bank or dont use an atm in a shady location.
My goto ATM is in the lobby level of my job with multiple security guards on duty... practically impossible for someone to try to install something on it

Heh, I suppose that's true, to a certain extent. These people don't really know who they are stealing from, though. Steal from the wrong person, and they might end up in a landfill somewhere.

I was just generalizing, not saying that this is the only path. But sometimes it takes work to get work. Yes these people suck, some unfortunate people are so screwed over even it could be their life's saving.

Gotcha.

+1

He has a much newer/expensive car and a higher end/newer/expensive rig than I have.

Must be doing ok in his job...

Both of you don't know how I lived my life before my current job. I made 60k a year, 2 years ago. Now I'm lucky to bring in 12k a year and I had to go back to mommy house. Doing ok? not at all. While I can pay my bills and have to live pay check to pay check.

My "expensive" 18k car is a lease which my insurance is higher then the payment of the car.

LeninGHOLA, I would NEVER approve stealing other people money.

The lesson I learned...do NOT use visa debit cards...EVER!

My wife's card number got stolen last year, someone bought a few thousand dollars of stuff in Italy on it. That money came straight out of our checking account and we were down on cash until visa refunded it...two to three weeks.

Now we strictly use ATM only cards or visa rewards credit cards (not debit) and pay it off every time we use it.

What if I wrap my card in a ziplock bag? It works for...uhh...never mind.

I got done by this once, they stole my monies, i lost £290 but got it back from the bank a month later, you have to be very careful when using ATM machines, newer technology in the ATM machines scramble the signals from any device attached to it, but i am sure the crook is always a step ahead.

The crooks dont care about technology in the ATM machine. They only want to scan your card and sell the numbers on irc in bulk.

The real answer: Never USE a visa Debit Card.

Don't even have a visa debit card, just cancel it and get a regular ATM card and a regular credit card (one that is not tied to your actual bank account).

The bank machines I usually use have big clear plastic protrusions around where the card goes in.

It would be impossible to install a device like this one.

Bank machines can be designed to make skimming in this manner much more difficult.

Here's a solution. Hire people and get rid of the machines. Otherwise they're going to get smarter and smarter and then we'll have a nuclear holocaust as skynet empties our bank accounts to buy all those nuclear warheads :D.

They just need to design the front of the ATM better.
Scrap all this plastic, and make a flat steel cover for the card. You would likely have to indent the screen and pin still but if the crook had to carry around a whopping big bit of steel to cover his electronics then it would be more noticeable when they are playing with the machine (and more noticeable for the end user)

Just cover your hand when you touch type your pin. they need the video of you typing your pin without it they just have your card number. never been scammed.
