And you thought you had a slow Internet connection. Well, for the good folk of Pitcairn Island, smack dab in the middle of nowhere, having your Internet access doubled would be a pretty big deal even if it still only tops out at 512k.

Locals pay NZ$100 ($81) per month for up to 2GB of data. A team from the United States is set to travel to Pitcairn in June to upgrade the satellite link.

Holy crap, People actually live on that tiny spit of land? WoW...they couldn't be any more remote if they tried...

I guess they like it, they don't need to have 20Mbit speed to download porn and warez on daily basis like we do...

According to the article that 512Kb is shared between 48 people

You would think with Satellite you could get at least 5MB, and what about multiple connections? Maybe at that spot there's no real coverage from the big Satellite providers.

48 people...who cares if it's only a 2GB cap.

Pitcairn Islands, now with available 512Kbps Internet Speeds, starting at just $80 a month*

*Additional costs for fuel to power generators to use Internet may apply.

512kbit / 48 ppl....gawd dang...wonder if they have a local open recursive DNS and local caching proxy server to reduce the amount of bandwidth that has to go off the island.

Plus the cost of power.....they probably don't set up all night on a computer anyways.

according to wiki, they have diesel generators that run 10hrs a day plus use wind.

bet they can use one of these guys:

(for one...also wondered about how they get water, etc.)

man...just imagine trying to set up a LAN party....well I guess it would be (is)LAN(d) party

or trying to do a patch for BF3....
it would take so long...by the time u finish, it's already obsolete...

Yeah, I hope they do a lot of caching of data. I also presume that they have high speed connections between themselves.

I used to work at a satellite isp, where customers were on 512k links.
I think now they just open it wide up to 4mb, and encourage people to get bigger plans.

In Australia a lot of isp shape your speed to 64kb if you hit your quota.

A lot of satellite use in Africa, but the costs were extreme. I found some document howtos on linking to proxies, which would strip images from email & web, to reduce downloads.
Saved on frees and sped things up.

There are still people around on dialup as well.

512kb/s is blazin'.

I used to be happy with a pair of ISDN 64KB/s channels at work for Internet access. That was like 16 years ago. Dunno if anything has changed since.

Honestly internet was better with slower connection. More time to load/download = less things you experience online = much lower chance of burn out.

I browse so much these days, whatever I see is no longer "wow that's new and cool and interesting" like it was when I was on dial up

Darn I was about to say that you might as well be on the moon, but I bet NASA gave a better link

Maybe the team could stop by Sunnyvale and upgrade our maxed out 1.5Mbps cabling, to something newer than tech from 2002.

What are you people on?!?! Pitcairn has 153.6 GB/s of bandwidth... see, it says so right here...

 Oh, wait...

:D

Man, that's insane. On one hand, IDK what I'd do with myself if there was no usable Internet. OTOH I'd like to experience that. I have a feeling that I'd be a lot more active, out and about, doing stuff, etc. Or, we could just get all the p0rn off the Internet and accomplish the same thing LOL.

A lot better than my parents in law who live in a rural area in Germany, they're still stuck on ISDN and the ISP don't care about upgrading the lines as there's only 50 people living in the village (and no satellite possible due to nearby woods).

when I first saw the headline I started thinking a certain AMD video card was doubling its mem bandwidth.

yes people live there mostly decendants of the survivors of the mutiny on the Bounty.
