Whatever happened to bong coolers?

They were all the rage a decade ago and I remember a few people here had some serious setups that were 7ft+ tall. What happened to them all? Are they not capable of cooling our quad core cpu's?
 
I think it's just that the system is open- you are not going to keep clean water. Plus evaporation loss gets worst the taller the tower and hotter the processor.
 
Loud, water gets filthy, requires regular maintenance, and makes your room humid. Those were fun back in the day, but we have some much more refined options these days. :)
 
They are still around. Poke around the overclock.net forums, they have some very massive threads about them.
 
yea, like dry ice or any other non-self-contained cooling setup, they are fun to play around with but not too good for a long term or low maintainence application.
