I guess this news isn't too surprising. If you've ever driven in Las Vegas, you'd know that self-driven cars would be a huge improvement over the way they are driven by people.

Nevada's DMV worked with Google, automakers, insurance companies, and law enforcement on the regulations. The department said that other states already have bills to allow self-driving cars and are likely to follow Nevada's lead.

Headline for the inevitable accidents with these cars: John doe was Googled really bad and is in serious condition!

I don't need a self driving car, I have cruise control! Put that on, take a nap, wake up when I get there.

That said, simply giving the OK to do this doesn't mean it'll happen anytime soon, no company wants to be the one who gets sued off their ass for causing an accident.... though it's funny human negligence causes accident and yeah there's some suing but not huge amounts (usually), computer "negligence" and we got sue the company into oblivion!

Governor Sandoval was telling the google car story yesterday and he kept talking about hitting the south end of Washoe Valley at 70MPH and trying his best not to touch the wheel as the car drove over the hill and into Carson. I cannot imagine taking that corner and letting the car do it.

This whole idea will be dead the moment someone becomes dead. Sadly, that's what it's going to take.

They couldn't even get this shit right in Total Recall, and that's what, 100 years in the future?

Glad to see this. Self driving vehicles are the way of the future. Hopefully I'll be around to see self driving flying vehicles.

The biggest issue face self-driving cars is not road conditions...it is other drivers. Now, they have improved the system enough to handle the standard "bad driver". However, what they are probably still working on is the driver that is intent on causing a self-driving car to crash.

Sadly, people are still driving cars too, people are still flying, and people are still taking cruises. Why is it sad? Computer assisted driving probably will be the best thing for fuel economy and traffic congestion ever.

Are you shitting me? Please tell me this is just a joke.

Now I'm just picturing a closed course with an AI car, and a second AI car programmed to run down the first AI car to test the system for handling this. :)

I live in Vegas and this could be an improvement to how some of our drivers operate. When you couple bad drivers with horrible road design, you get a lot of accidents at certain areas.

Cameras. I'm almost positive that the these self-driving cars will have some sort of recording device for anyone intentionally trying to cause it to wreck. IE: The old slam on your brakes so they rear-end you trick - it doesn't work so well when the video shows you slammed on your brakes.

I want a self driving Porsche. :D

and they have different driving modes, one of them would be: michael schumacher mode. weeeeee!

The #1 reason for accidents, cited by the person at fault, is "I lost control". The fact is that the driver lost control prior to the point where they were aware of it. Talking on the cell, daydreaming, conversations, listening to music, etc. When you don't have your full attention on the task of driving (the reason you're in the car), your chance of accident becomes far greater.

Computers, however, have NOTHING ELSE TO DO but monitor road conditions, vehicles around them, rate of speed vs posted linits, etc. Also, there's no way in hell that self-driving cars are going to be ok'ed unless they have redundant systems to overcome device failure, along with alerts to the driver.

Unlike humans, vehicles can also be aware of traffic conditions far ahead of them, and can re-route themselves through a less-problematic route, easing congestion and reducing the risk of accident that these areas cause. A properly-equipped vehicle will be able to react to an emergency situation far better than a human, including another manual driver's error. (However, if someone is deliberately and consciously out to get you, they'll probably get you.)

So, regardless of the flaws in self-driven vehicles, real or perceived, the accident rate for them will be far lower than what is produced by human error. It's folly to reject a better solution because it's not perfect (The Perfectionist Fallacy), especially when the solution provides dramatic improvement.

Giving up the illusion of control is going to be tough, though, because of habit. New drivers, however, won't have that problem.

I know I am incredibly excited for this. I can just imagine a freeway clear of traffic, since the cars know how to break up traffic jams.

As if americans aren't fat enough already...

The american future

Fat, lazy, american pigs. Now you just need to find out how to make the cars hover.

While I admit we have our problems, would you have preferred the relatively primitive and oppressive conditions of socialism and/or communism that wouldn't even have allowed you to post your libellous generalization of a people you don't even know?

If they were alive, my WWI vet grandafther and my WWII vet father might have had something to say about your ingratitude, ignorance, and prejudice.

Cool, self driving cars. Now if you get a DUI you should have to pay to beta test the system.

why'd it have to be a intro'd via a Prius?

the prius has a much more robust, modern, and powerful electrical system which allows companies such as google to "plug and play" numerous devices into the system...plus it helps sell more prius's.

EX DRIVER! WOOT, anime coming to life one step at a time!
Somehow I can see this being a necessity. I wanna be one of the Ex-Drivers though, screw being at the mercy of a glitchy system. Nd you know it would be too, because that would be to price of it going to the lowest bidder (not to mention some politician's relative or buddy).

I can't wait to see the monster wrecks that happen when some autonomous vehicles get caught out in a snow storm...

Yeah right. I was thinking about a situation where the people in the vehicle are being held up by thieves, but the car won't move because there are obstacles (the thieves) in the way. Not like that would ever happen in Vegas mind you.

Watching an autonomous car get through a huge road construction project would be fun too. You often end up on the wrong side of the street and getting flagged along by humans down an unpaved section of road in extreme close proximity to temporary walls and people. Surely at some point the car needs to say "F*** this, start driving human"
