This is most definitely the "ya think?" story of the day.

Contrary to recent media reports, the FBI did not arrest MegaUpload founder Kim DotCom after being pressured by managers at the four major record companies, who supposedly feared DotCom would launch an unlicensed music service, sources close to the investigation told CNET.

and to think all the piracy that said movie and music exces are so fearful of could be eliminated almost overnight if THEY would simply get with the times and change their pricing/distribution structure.

this kind of scenario is worse then drug issue. for every king pin you take down 20 will fight for all the potential customers.

ya i heard that megaupload was coming out with a legit music service that returned 90% profits to the artist. then all it would take is a few major artists to switch to it and talk about how much money they made and it would virtually kill the current music industry because they are just greedy middle men that no longer serve a purpose.

no, it will never be completely eliminated. The way I see it, in this day and age, many people have an overly large sense of self entitlement. And it's these people that will pirate because they feel they're entitled to these luxuries

MPAA chairman Chris Dodd should also be in jail for bribery. It's a good thing for him that Obama is also in the MPAA's pockets.

Who says the law is an unwavering, and that does not bow down to organizations?

What the heck does the MPAA have on the offices of law, that would make them co-operate besides a pocket full of cash, that should have found it's way to the artists?

What becomes clear is that two years ago, when the FBI began investigating the cyberlocker service, the film studios were far more intent on taking down MegaUpload than their counterparts at the music labels.
In addition, records show that when the FBI began its investigation, MegaUpload had yet to approach the music labels about MegaBox.
Nothing to do with the music service.

The fact that a website can forcibly be shut down without a trial of some sort is pretty disgusting. What is worse is how the clueless media portrays the site as just a huge rip-off venue.

I was listening to some talk radio and these two guys were talking about it and they go "well, I think it was basically a website where people downloaded bootleg music and movies". Then, they go on to form an opinion on it based on no knowledge whatsoever. It really was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, how do these people get on the radio?

Both true and false

There exists a price in the market where I flat refuse to pay for a good or service due to it either sucking ass or being a huge rip off. Movies for example -- if I pay 15 dollars for a movie ticket why in the FUCK should I have to sit through 20 minutes worth of advertisements? I can understand free TV having ads - but if you want me to pay you and then you make money on top of me watching the BS ads in the theater? no thanks I'll stay at home, wait a week or two and download the movie. Added bonus of not having Sheniquia on her cell phone kicking my chair behind me.

Video games -- remember back in the early 90s where just about every game had a shareware or demo version? where did those go? I'm much more inclined to play a game if I've gotten a taste, got a little hooked and then told for 20 or 30 dollars unlock the full thing.

This thinking of "pay me before you ever get to see the goods" doesn't fly, not even for drug dealers. If you wanted to buy a briefcase full of coke, would you hand over your money sight unseen? or without knowing if the product is good?

The new thinking of government and companies of "fuck em" doesn't fly with me.

Ever paid 60 dollars for a game and after 1 hour you think to yourself "god damn this sucks"?

I have no problem letting go of money when the product or experience is worth it, guess what it does, it keeps me coming back for more!

You will always have the kid in mom's basement stealing a game because he wasn't going to buy it anyway .Who does that effect? Nobody.

The only thing more sick than the MPAA and RIAA's view/actions is the fact that they are allowed to interface and persuade the federal government (who already sucks) to be their hitmen.

That's what parliament is all about. Decision making with little to no understanding. SOPA/PIPA were prime examples of that.

MP Against SOPA: "Industry experts are suggesting that these changes to the DNS infrastructure will actually decrease security, how do you respond to that"

78 year old that can't work e-mail and refuses to consult experts: "I disagree"..

Everything is about who is backing you and who is paying.. You no longer need facts or any understanding of what you are doing or the possible repercussions.

I have FiOS cable TV + premium channels.

I still "pirate" TV shows like Dexter and such just because I don't like having to deal with having to be on-time + it's not immediately on demand. Why can't they just make the shows available for VoD the second the show was supposed to air? No reason, other than they're lazy.

Music and Movie industries need to compete with free. I pay for Pandora One and Netflix. I'm willing to pay. I'd pay more for these services if they had a bigger selection without hesitation. I'm just not willing to jump through hoops or get burned on shitty and inconvenient service.

Yup, pissed me off enough with the constant commercials on TV that I finally cancelled my U-Verse. If TV were free, I'll sit through ads. But if I'm paying $100 a month, I won't tolerate commercial interruption every 15 mins to milk me of more time and money. Also annoyed that they make it virtually impossible to use my computer to act as a DVR, so they can sell their inferior DVR with a tiny harddrive to me.

Its gotten worse now that the sheep have gotten into the habit of preordering. Before people even see the latest cellphone or video game review or anything, they have already bought and paid for it so they can have it 24hrs earlier.

There is also far far far too much money spent on entertainment in general IMO. Some of the richest people in the world are not world leaders or people advancing society with great new inventions, its entertainers. Guys that throw a football around or run around with plastic guns in front of a camera that just have more cash thrown at them than NASA engineers working on Mars missions could make in a lifetime. B-list actors IMO shouldn't be making $30K for a ONE day shoot, it should be a skilled labor job rate like everyone else and with digital distribution costing virtually nothing, consumers should also not be required to fork over $15 to view it on iTunes. $1 in fact is what I'd consider reasonable, but its not about reasonable, its about charging the highest possible price that the market will bare.

The difference is that drugs lead to addiction, injury, death, amongst other things

Piracy of movies, actors still making millions & movie studios still making profit hand over fist.

Yeah, save the Linux ISO's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Except that the extent to which greed is popularized in this country is just disgusting. Look at all TV, media, fasion, etc. It's all about having more than the next guy

Funny, I don't remember voting for the MPAA. Why are they running the government?

Wait, let me understand this. 4 private labels conspired to collude with each other to have a private citizen of another country to have him arrested and his property seized because they feared that he and his company would launch a service that threatened their music/movie monopoly? What fucking planet do I live on again?

I'm getting tired of this, yes "pirating" is wrong. It's not stealing, but it's ripping someone off of a "product" they expected you to pay for. But what are people ripping off? A show that was already aired on television, or a song that's been played on the radio a hundred times, or someone's words.

It's not even remotely the same as shoplifting, where an actual product was taken and now can no longer be sold. This IP stuff is way out of control, and now there are FBI crackdowns and stuff like people are cooking meth or something.

I recently got a complaint letter through my ISP from disney. Saying im violating thier copyright. I downloaded a Cars 2 Rip. Which I own. I have the Blu-ray, DVD, DC version. I ripped it to my PC, but handbrake and AnyDVD dont support removing the protection, so I cant shrink it, strip it, and put it on my sons hard drive for his TV. He is 3, and ruins DVDs, like crazy, so I rip the blu-rays, and throw them on a hard drive, then it doesnt matter.

I have no issue downloading things, if its good, ill go out an buy it. Simply to have the manual etc. If its complete crap, I wont be using it (games music etc), and delete it. I have no issue paying $60 for a game, if I can get my $60 out of it. Prime example Skyrim, no issue buying that. I have quiet a bit of time into it (maybe 20-30 hrs), and I can still play, and still enjoy it. So thats an easy one to buy, some games, not so much. I havent bought a bad game in ages, but then again, I havent gotten to play many. I still have Dark Souls in the wrapper, I bought in Nov.

Next thing you know these kids will want to pirate other kid's homework.

Yeah I totally agree. It's just getting WAY out of hand.

The more I hear of this crap, the more I hope the pirates end up winning. Idealy, the MPAA, RIAA and other such agencies need to somehow be crushed. I really don't know how that could happen, but there has to be a way to make them hurt, without breaking the law. Then again they'll just make laws on the fly to stop whatever it is that is being done, such as what they did with the concept of someone making their own label company.

Technically the FBI didn't arrest him at all. The New Zealand Police did. The FBI has no jurisdiction to arrest anyone in New Zealand, hence the extradition process currently going through the courts.

Nobody wants to see the MPAA/RIAA crash and burn more than I do.

They preach about piracy taking money from the artist yet they are doing exactly the same thing. With or without piracy, artist still don't get what they deserve with these crooks in the middle anyway.

the joke is...they make more money with the pirates....if the mafiaa is out of the way even if someone pirates word of mouth will get it around to buys, and those pirates are more likely to then go to a show or purchase merchandise...

Bullshit. People do it because they can and do not support money greedy scamming corporations and not because they feel "entitled".

Cover up story! who would even have this story publish otherwise.

They feel entitled to the stuff anyway, yeah, just like was said.

Entitled means they do it because they feel they deserve it. Doubt that is the case at all and you are just parroting corporate propaganda. How does it feel being societies bitch?

Look at the post above yours and you will see a shining example of someone who feels entitled to just D/L whatever he wants for free.

I knew I would see this post, just didn't think so soon. I even read the guys post above mine and was like this will put a dent in his argument....lol. I was just being honest!

You live on the planet where no one reads articles before posting about them.

I have not bought a CD in over 13 years(Might have bought one CD in my entire life). Once I discovered downloading movies, I never went to another movie in the theater or rented another movie again, period. Okay, maybe once or twice with some vagina....I mean female but that's it(However, I WOULD rent them release day if I could watch them at my home). Software, lets just be clear, I'm running "Windows 7 Ultimate" with all the newest fun software out. That about covers that!

I don't consider myself as being "Entitled", nor do I consider myself a thieve! I just don't fucking view virtual things/stuff/content the same way I view physical stuff. I guess I'm a slow learner.

I had to buy the computer, I'm not buying the software to fully utilize it. I had to pay to see the band live, I'm not paying to listen to them in my room too!

The video/movie downloading is a much harder excuse (But i'll try anyway). I could not have paid for all of the documentaries/movies/lectures/porn/etc I've watched if I had to pay for it all. I WOULD NOT BE AS SMART AS I AM RIGHT NOW IF I DID IT LEGALLY. It (FACT) would've hindered my current understanding of the world in a major way, seriously! I think I've watched every meaningful documentary in existence.

So....did I justify it? Because I really don't give a fuck if I did. The world isn't fair to me so I'm not fair to the world. I know enough to know the systems rigged and the rich get richer (a lot) using it the way they designed it to be. I need every advantage I can get. I need media/information to ease my mind and I need the very little money I have to survive in life.

My point: GRRRRRRRRRR

I'll stop stealing when the people trying to stop me from stealing stop stealing from me. Got it? Good!

Being anonymous is invigorating. Oh shit, maybe we should have every user have an individual IP address(like SSN#/serial number) and one userid for the interwebz so we can track every(I mean every) click, click, click! Yeah, that will stop our slaves from saving some of the money we want to steal and tax from them!

Yeah, you're a shining example of righteousness and goodness.
