There are a couple new videos out today that show off Serious Sam 3: BFE - color scheme options and the game's blood options. Pretty cool stuff and, if you haven't done so already, you need to play this game. :)

what the hell happend to serious sam I remember when the games used to have impressive graphic engines...

Oh wait it must have been made for console noobs never mind.

I don't remember Serious Sam having an amazing graphics engine... except for "Holy crap... I can see forever!!!!" when I first planed SS1.

Yeah. Serious Sam has never been for the graphics. Just a fun mindless shooter.

holy shit. that narrator was *painful* to listen to. had to though to get to the technical reasons for the color differences sandwiched between gut wrenching jokes and attempts to 'relate to the kids, yo'.

The whole character is supposed to be tongue in cheek. They're not trying to "relate to kids", they've created a caricature that you can laugh at that still gives you information.

This was THE game I was waiting fire this year, and I wasn't disappointed. It is awesome and IT WORKS! The textures are awesome, go see the screen shots in the gaming forum right here on [H].

The gaming engine was made for Pc's, no console port for the readers too young to know who Sam is.

Didn't the original Serious Sam game have these same options? Seems like I remember them being there waaaay back.

I'm just not buying into the hype. Because it has all of the awesome PC options, but none of the gameplay depths of today, or actual graphic prowess of games today, I'm not sure why its being hailed by the PC community other than its not on a console. I mean run and gun and tons of enemies is fun and all, but it stopped being fun for more than a few minutes 10+years ago. So because its massively customizeable and on a PC it gets a pass for really being an average game?

You very clearly haven't played the game. Massive graphics options, mod support, network play, 16 person campaign co-op, 4 person split screen ON A PC, no regen health, tons of weapons, difficulty settings that go so high your enemies are invisible, nearly flawless eyefinity support...it's as PC as a game can get.

On top of all of that, a lot of us think it's really really fun. If it's not your cup of tea, that's perfectly OK we all like different things, but it's not a console port in any way.

Well, there is nothing else on the market like it right now and hasn't been for a while. This is a good old throw back to the games of yore and I think a lot of people are appreciating it for that very reason. And your comment about it not having much graphical prowess couldn't be further from the truth IMO. This is by far the best looking DX9 game I have ever played. There are options I cannot enable or play maxed out with on a GTX 580 at 1080p. Its not Battlefield 3 but thats about the only game that comes to mind that I can honestly say it looks better than.

Maybe I have been spoiled with BF3(BC2) and the likes of Crysis, but that just didn't look terribly impressive without any mods or anything. *shrugs* I guess that game has always been sorta geared towards destruction, haha, but even still....

I already have like 25 hours logged in this game. Completed the game and now going back finding the secrets. This is good old fashion mindless killing. I mean sometimes you just gotta kill 20 things with one pack of C4. My complains about the graphics are the low res walls, and the lack of varied environments. I think the NPC models and lighting look pretty good. I mean its not like they a AAA dev or anything.

Although I have no plans to buy SS3 (not my cup of tea), I *LOVE* the blood options. Not because blood 'n' guts might bother me, but because I have four little kids running around the house, and I'd prefer them not to see alien entrails being plastered across the landscape. Kudos to the devs for adding this.

Now I gotta go dig up the tweak for TF2 to give the party gibbs...

Serious Sam series has always been about such simple run and gun gameplay, what makes it special was the large horde of monsters waves you have to mindlessly gun down with overpowering weapons.

yeah i know, i played the originals a TON, loved them. I just guess im saying that type of gameplay has kind of run its course, at least as far as im concerned. I suppose if everyone else is enjoying it thats all that matters. I personally just can't get hyped over this new title soley on the fact its built for the 'pc'.

That's one of the reasons I'm aching for it, yes. But it is most certainly not the only reason. Croateam have consistently put out a good product in the past and from what I understand this is no different. That consistency of having a game that won't blow into a million pieces is nice in a world filled with Bethesdas that apparently don't know how to bug check (still love their games, but the bugs do make it a bittersweet thing). Another reason I want it is because I honestly like a mindless rampage every so often. It reminds me of the games I grew up on only in a more modern setup. I honestly would be happy as a fat kid at the unlimited dessert bar if id would take a cue from Croateam and give me Doom II gameplay with today's graphics. Games needn't be overly complex to be enjoyed. I still enjoy Doom II and the old Super Mario games of yore just as much as I did when I first played them and am always thrilled when something comes along to harken back to that bygone era. And, finally, the Serious Sam games have always been funny. Sure it's that cheesy overdone humor, but they often get it right to get a chuckle between the waves of madness.

At least, that's how it is for me. Can't wait for Christmas and this being one of the assured gifts awaiting for me on Steam.

Yes the flowers explding and green blood were always options from SS1 on. I still have both games from the beginning. This was always our favorite LAN game for my boys and I followed closely by Joint Ops. We used the "Groovey" mode for blood until they got a little older. I'm too old to figure out the game pads but I can still kick their butts when it comes to a mouse and keyboard!

Have you noticed that the majority of users saying they enjoy playing this game have 6 or more years as a [H]ard member? Stands to reason why that is.

One last thing, has anyone found the developers with the giant heads yet? I remember when we first found that easter-egg. :):D

The game is a disappointment (not a major one, but a disappointment nonetheless). I played the hell out of FE and SE in high school and loved SS2 (probably played through the game at least 5 times). This game is a major step backward in content, professional finish, and worst of all, fun. Even at $32 the game was not worth it. If Croteam makes SS4, I'll be waiting for reviews and probably the inevitable price drop to recoup my "loss" on this one.

Whoops, forgot to add the main point, pre-defined positions on the color saturation and the extra modes don't save it.

How would either of those recoup your "loss" ?
Its a seriously mindless old school first person shooter made for serious FPS fans...
...and almost all FPS's are the same old thing over and over again.
Compare it to some of the other high tech crap released at higher prices this year.
Its a good game. Here are some: Reviews
Drop the price to 20 bucks and its a good game at a ridiculous price.

c-color in games??

wowee. i had almost forgotten it existed since the era of COLOR CORRECT EVERYTHING INTO OBLIVION.

i mean bf3 in no way can convey the feeling of a place being cold without dulling all the color and shifting it towards a sickly blue / grey so i guess i should be thankful for that. never in a million years could my feeble mind possibly have come up with the notion that a mountain side might be cold or a desert might be hot.

Assuming there is an SS4, if I don't pre-order and wait for reviews and user experiences to surface, I can make a more informed assessment on whether or not the game is worth the current price tag than I did this time around. By assuming that Croteam would improve upon the SS1's and SS2 and continue their trajectory, I was in err and left feeling I overpaid for the ~10 hours of gameplay I received. If I avoid this mistake in the future, this venture would have proved a valuable learning experience, thus recouping my monetary loss through gained insight in addition to not "overpaying" again.

Right, and that begs the question "what is a serious FPS fan?" (petitio principii)
...and almost all FPS's are the same old thing over and over again.
Which is fine if that "same old thing" is actually fun.

How difficult is it to type "Serious Sam 3" into metacritic.com's search engine? You have a site that does meta-analysis for you and yet you still screwed it up - http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/serious-sam-3-bfe

But even you seem to think it's only a "good game." Point made.

To expand, Croteam made some big design changes, both good and bad. They also didn't make any changes to their formula, both good and bad. The engine itself is very cool. I think it runs a little on the slow side for the graphics produced, but it has a Crysis-level of playability even at lower FPS, which I tip my hat to Croteam for (few engines manage that). I like the realistic approach they took and it's a welcome stylistic change. I'm not saying it's better or worse than the cartoony SS2, but fresh. I'm pretty open to art/style as long as it's not half-assed. The size and depth to customize, especially just through the GUI of the options menu, is awesome and other developers should take note (not that they will, damn console ports). I applaud Croteam for attention to detail here. Meleeing is an excellent addition to gameplay - it's cool to see and a great way to save ammo. Stomping an entire room of crawlers is great fun. Sprinting is also welcomed, especially for some of the larger areas. I also like the new level design, especially in the beginning, running through urban Cairo, taking out lone monsters, etc.

Now, things that I didn't like. First, all the ads proclaim "no cover, all man" and that's complete bullshit. You have to cover because the AI in this game was coded by a high school basic comp student. It's much worse than even the First Encounter, and reminds me of mid-90's games (Doom, etc.). Pretty much every enemy has no movement pattern beyond stand still and instant shoot the minute you peak out of a cover. There's very little opportunity to circle enemies or run/dodging, which is what SS is all about. Adding reloading to 3 of the main weapons was one of the worst design choices I've seen in awhile. You want to call a game "old school?" Remove that bullshit right now, or at least have an option to turn it off. Reloading is for the handgun only because it has infinitie ammo (and what the hell happened to dual handguns?) The gun sound effects are all weak, very disappointed there. I wasn't expecting real world BF3-type effects, just something with some "oompf" and balls, not this muffled "pshh" for pretty much every gun. Also, where the hell are my grenades?

The soundtrack is very limited. They have the same half a dozen or so recycled (but good) bongo tracks throughout the game and one or two heavy metal "SCREAAAAAMM" tracks for tougher fights. This is a big letdown after SS2 had one of the best and most varied soundtracks of any game I've ever played. Guns lack power. Maybe the game isn't really balanced for two-player co-op, but I think the additional player now makes every enemy just barely need two shots compared to one. I tried single player for a bit and it was an order of magnitude easier. Also the humor sucks in this one, big time. The humor was getting better and more zany with each release, more easter eggs, funny crap, etc. SS2 was awesome in this respect. SS3 is just so droll - "oh hey, Sam shut down that woman on his cellphone again, ha ha... no." Another thing missing - where the hell are the upgrades? No Serious Damage? Serious Jump? wtf. I was hoping they'd also have the woman that yells "SERIOUS DAMAGE!" when you pick it up, but nothing. Finally, the game is just too short. SS2 was released in less time and had more than twice the content. Such a shame. There were half a dozen moments in SS3 where my friend and I both said "oh yes, here we go, this is Serious Sam!" but they were short-lived, few, and far between. Most of the game is just a lifeless grind, which is a major disappointment to what could have been.

Anyway, long post but I figured I should explain my point of view.

I would have been more disappointed to hear that SS3 had changed up the gameplay to add features like regen health, cover mechanics and escort missions.

SS3 is a great game. It might actually be my favorite in the series. I'm glad that they didn't fill it up with all of that gimmiky shit.

I don't understand why the narrator can't say "noir". It's not pronounced "noor".

Although if they REALLY wanted to do neo-noir impressively (think 'Sin City'), then they should have left the blood shaders in (de-saturated, of course, but still full color) over the black-and-white world.

That'd be...pretty awesome, actually.

Yeah, Serious Sam NEVER looked good. It was always dated on release. The difference was is that it allowed for extremely long viewing distances and more enemies on screen at one time than ANY other game ever has. Really the Serious Sam games have always had unique gameplay and the humor added to them make them a great experience. I haven't played the latest one yet, but I will one of these days. I really enjoyed playing the first two in Co-Op with friends.

You found him funny? Well, good for you I guess. Annoying and void of humor as far as I'm concerned.
