Not only is this smart to do now, it is also pretty inexpensive. Attorney fees and lawsuits cost a fortune so snagging these .XXX names now seems like the logical thing to do.

The new .xxx domain will be launched later this year, and before that, everyone with a trademark has the opportunity to reserve names during what's called a "sunrise phase" aimed at protecting organizations against prospectors who grab sites to use or sell at a profit. "We don't want someone coming across our trademark on a porn site. God only knows what they'd come up with," said Terry Robb, director of information technology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

and hey, when the teachers have sex with their students, they now have a place to put the video!

... money grab by the registrars. Think about it. 100 million domains times $200? Do the math.

LOL, somebody better grab hardforum.xxx, hardocp.xxx, or even hard.xxx!

Seems like a waste of money. No one is going to mix-up a school website with an xxx website. If it's simply a trademark issue, it's trivial to use a trademark in a domain name that's a variation of anything the school has registered.

lest you all forget whitehouse.gov versus whitehouse.com - i think Clinton was president so people could have easily thought they were at the right site

Seems like the smart thing to do. There are a bunch of porn sites that feature college/dorm videos. Makes sense to protect themselves from being mixed up with those sites.

Please apply some critical thinking and stop believing that these things occur in a vacuum.

Maybe I'm just immature but I always found "Hardforum" to be a hilarious name for a message board. Hell, there was a topic in General Hardware once that was titled, "I think its beefy enough...". I laughed for a good minute when I first saw that :p

Maybe the fucking Whitehouse will get their act together this time...the .com used to be a porn site for many, many years. I think every highschooler (and teacher) must have pulled the xxx site up on accident at one time during school.

Not at all

Whenever I tell someone that hardforum is my favorite message board, I usually have to explain what this site is about. :p

...did he really say "We don't want someone coming across our trademark.." thats a classic.. :)

for a college/university it's actually smart... you can almost guarantee things like harvard.xxx featuring all the nudes of girls attending that school

who still does direct url browsing anyway, let alone accidentally put in .xxx??

theres only a handful of web addresses i will try to manually hit. other than that the url input of my browser is only used for quick searching my browse history

It should be illegal to squat on ANY domain name that you do not plan to put to legitimate use. PERIOD.

Why the government permits this nonsense of squatting to eliminate its use or reselling for huge profit is beyond me. Heck, I allowed one of my personal websites to lapse by a week inadvertently, and when I tried to renew... low and behold the domain name had been purchased, and for over a decade now is being squatted on along with thousands of other names.
