If you have the skills, hacking for the government might be a solid career choice! I hear the feds pay pretty good and the benefits are great. ;)

Have skills and need a job in this cruddy economy? There's been a desperate need for hackers for a long time, hackers as in white hats, pen testers, and cyberwarriors. Earlier this year, DHS was facing "a trio of potential nightmares" which included cybersecurity, homegrown terrorists and intelligence sharing. There's "a shortage of sophisticated hackers to fill the cybersecurity gap."

The government couldn't pay the kind of money it would take to make those hackers want to work for them in the first place, which is in the millions.
 
Actually there are many ex-hackers who work for the government. There's the appeal of a stable job, security, not going to jail at some point down the line, and maybe patriotism.
 
Why couldn't the jerkbags who hacked steam do this instead?
 
The pay is crap, it is why they don't have the good hackers standing in line to work for them. Anyone with actual skill can get paid triple what the government will in the private sector.
 
I find it ironic that to practice skills needed in hacking one must break the law, and to be eligible for this government position you must have the skills to hack. Therefore you must break the law to get this government job.
