Consoles Became "Lead Platform" Late in BF3 Development

What happened to the PC being the "main platform" for Battlefield 3? Apparently that changed "late in the process" and the devs switched focus to the consoles to get the game done. That kinda makes you wonder if they were just paying lip service to the PC community in the first place.

"We said originally that the PC was the lead SKU of the game, but in mid-production we switched to console as lead platform to make sure we could get all the versions done for release," Troedsson confirmed. "Our ambition at DICE is to use the power of each individual platform to get the most out of the game," he added.

Well, when you look at that Origin garbage and the web based server browser, it's not really hard to make that connection.

I won't buy BF3.

Your missing a good game......and for what?
no matter how it was developed, its a lot fun to play

Well that just feels like, "We're glad you really like it, but it wasn't really meant for you."

I don't care what he, or anyone else much says. I think it looks fantastic, plays very well, and most importantly, have fun with it.

If more games came out that took advantage of PC hardware like BF3 did, I couldn't care less what their "lead" platform is. It's business and part of business will always be lip service. At the end of the day, I judge on the final product and let me wallet do the talking.

Eventually splitting your dev team to deal with the issues of the other platforms is going to happen. This multi-platform dev stuff is expensive and time consuming. Devs said "late in the process", which could mean: "We needed to get core things done for the PC that can not be done on console first with respect to milestones".

BF3 is still a gorgeous game.

Front page, really?

[...]but in mid-production we switched to console as lead platform to make sure we could get all the versions done for release

Re-read it...in mid-production, they had to prioritize the consoles in order to get them ready for release. But instead we'll have 7+ pages of moaning because DICE didn't priortize the PC 100% of the time.

And yes, I totally see the connection between a web based browser and consoles...wait what?

I understand where you're coming from. I've seen your arguments on this subject.

I think you "know" me well enough by now to know I'd tell it to you straight and I think I've got a good enough feel of you by now to say this with confidence:

I KNOW you would be happy with this game if you played it. Seriously. You're missing out on one of at least this year's best games and I think you'd feel that way yourself if you played it.

Q-BZ if you can actually convince Fail to change one of his positions, I nominate you for lead negotatiator for the Israel/Palestine peace agreement.

I think people have it the wrong way around Dice wasn't paying lip service to the pc gamers in the begining. they are pay lip service to console gamers now.whats happening is dice has put so much emphasis on how they developed primarily for pc that no they have to at least pretend like they put a bunch of effort into the console versions for pr reasons. because as much as dice wants to support pc gamers they still have to at least appease console makers because thats where their primary source of income is going to be.

As someone who worked in the industry, i dont see what all the fuss is about. This is standard for any PC/Console game, Early on the entire game is built on a single code base and developed until it is safe to fork the code into a console version and PC version where changes to either can be made without negatively impacting the other.

Console games actually make money where as the piracy is lower, so why wouldnt a developer give some focus to it? Doesnt mean they ignored the PC version completely.

To all those "This is why i wont play BF3" Grow up no one cares, if you arent going to play it dont, making a post simply to say you arent going to play it is pointless.

They switched over so they could get consoles to do just as well. BF3 is not only an amazing game and probably the best PC game I've purchased in years, but it's also obviously a game for PC in every way except for the Orgin crap. Compare Rage's graphical options to BF3's, and it's pretty clear which one is a PC game and which one is a console port.

Doesn't look like a console game, doesn't play like a console game. I really couldn't give two shits about what they prioritized when.

Well, to be truthful, unless it is a PC only title, there has to be prioritization with developer resources / teams etc.

No one is saying that the game suffered because of this, we are saying that it is funny to hear "PC first / Lead Platform" all the way up until the day the game ships....

...then a week later the story is "well, we switched focus halfway through..." :)

It's not a controversy....it's just funny.

Hell, I really dig on BF3, it has some issues but I like what they did with the game.

BF3 is like a really hot girl who's great in bed, but is occasionally a bitch.

I do not support being forced to install Origin to play BF3 and I bought BFBC2 and had a shitty experience playing with that game. It's not really my style of game after all, but hey, I was just like you guys, I bought BFBC2 after hearing everyone rave about it, I played the BFBC2 beta (cause I preordered). I didn't expect the pile of crap on release day that I got.

That soured me on EA/DICE.

But hey, if others like the game, more power to them, I fully support the idea that you and others should vote with your wallets for what you want to play and see done on the PC as a gaming platform.

I do the same, I'm just more vocal about it, although, less so, lately.

Honestly, having played BF3 on PC and Xbox 360, it is VERY clear the game was made for PC.

While the PC version has its issues (Origin, for one), the actual game itself is infinitely more suited for PC than the Xbox. The Xbox game feels like a port, and an obvious attempt to force the game to work on it. The system struggles with a lot of the game, but plays decently enough compared to the PC counter-part.

To me, this is a much better approach than making a console game and porting it to PC.

Before reading too much into any of it seriously you should check it out yourself.

It's cheaper, easier, and faster to release for console. But after all that remember to not quit, and finish the game for the PC players.

Get a competent market analyst in, and see if further development for finishing the game will bring in enough revenue to cover the cost, and/or turn a profit. Then do it.

+1 Totally, the idea was that they fell being on console development so they had to re-prioritize. No biggie, it's still the best MP FPS that's out right now for PC and will be for the foreseeable future.

They had a hard time getting it to work on consoles.

This is actually a PC port for a change lol.

Probably a good rule of thumb is to not buy a PC game that doesn't release a "shareware" version ;)

I'd like to be open minded, so if this game turns out to take advantage of what PC has to offer, then please make a headline post about it. Because it will be the first that I will encounter. If there are any other games that have followed the predicted path, please list them here :)

once again, game was kinda fugged up thanks to consoles.

i firmly believe they could added an extra dvd, or more GB to download for more SP exploration, longer missions, less quicktimes/cutscenes, and more bad guys..

instead they had to keep a limit in order to match consoles..
they coulda gave pc users more sp content but console players would complain.

Am I the only one that likes the web based server browser? Its nice to be able to log into Battlelog on my laptop to add friends when I am in class, with those friends. I can't play the game on my laptop, but I can manage everything and see my stats. The game crashes a lot on my PC though. As a BF fan, I have come to accept that the first month will be buggy.

Too lazy so I am going to just re-post this.

So Dice started building the game with PC's first and then switched production to consoles? Who cares? That means the core mechanics of the game are PC centric. The other games that are in fact console-ized were made in the opposite way.

I really do not know why anyone’s panties are in a bunch. At this point people really are just bitching to bitch.

Weren't you all over this games sweaty ballsack just a few months ago? No, scratch that...you DID have BF3's man juice all over your face...so what happened between then and now? Suddenly you want nothing to do with this game. Why?

I guess what is really important is that the engine was developed for pc, and as far as I can tell it was.

I could swear I remember you constantly trolling each and every MW thread and talking not only about how terrible the series is, but also about how much MW3 will suck and how BF3 is going to whoop its ass. You seemed all excited about BF3.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong person?

Probably, pretty sure I said no such things.

You havent played BF3 or even used Origin. Your opinion is based on? Nothing. Not sure why you continue to troll these boards.

As for BF3. Game does not feel like a console game at all. PC copy is the best copy like all DICE games have been for years.

Not wanting to use Origin is reason enough for me not to buy BF3, you don't have to like it, Dion. I suggest you lay off of the personal attacks. As I have stated in a post well above this one,

But hey, if others like the game, more power to them, I fully support the idea that you and others should vote with your wallets for what you want to play and see done on the PC as a gaming platform.

Your problem here is you don't like hearing a voice of dissent. You find it intolerable that others would think differently than you do. That sounds like a personal problem, I cannot help you with that.

I have zero problem with you not wanting to buy a game. Just don't call something Garbage when you have never used it.

Fail, don't even talk of supporting PC games considering you would/did buy a console game over a PC focused game.

It's like the definition of pornography "you know it when you see it". I have no desire to split up my gaming library between Origin and Steam, I would like all of my games to remain on Steam. It is garbage because Origin isn't new, it's the same shitty EA DM (EA Download Manager) that has been around for a few years and rebranded as Origin to launch it into the mainstream consciousness. It was shitty before it was called Origin, it's shitty after it's called Origin.

No Steam, no sale.

People are reading into this wrong. DICE is just saying this because of how much worse the console version is, they are trying to appease those people.

The game looks great and taxes my system if I want it to, the PC centric options and settings are there, and the multiplayer is great. Most people want this game for the multi player, which is good.

It's a pity the single player Campaign is a prime example of how console gaming has turned the FPS into a simple, on-rails coma inducing bore fest that exchanges genuine interactivity and gameplay with something barely better than Guitar Hero. It constantly tells you exactly what to do like you can't think for yourself, and it's full of jarring instances of having to hammer the spacebar or whatever key while you just passively watch your character do all this crazy shit that equates to nothing more than a cut scene. They should just put the keys I need to press on a scrolling fret board and have me vaguely aim now and again.

Glad I bought it though. The multiplayer is tops.
