Imagine how many people in the U.S. would have to be detained for posting false information on the internet? There wouldn't be enough police on the planet to tackle that "crime."

Chinese police have begun to detain and punish people for spreading rumours online, the government said on Tuesday, as authorities intensify efforts to censor content on the Internet. A university student in southwest China's Yunnan province was detained for disseminating fake information on a local murder, the State Internet Information Office said, while a man in Shanghai was taken into custody for 15 days for posting falsified tax documents online.

Seriously, this is China. Why do we expect them to treat their citizens with the same values and liberties as western countries?

im kinda torn on this one. trying to pass off fake info on a local murder could be construed as tampering with an investigation and i can get behind arresting someone for that. and thats not even taking into account the simple fact of just being an asshat to do something like that in the first place.

as for the fake tax documents, who does he think he is a US senator or something ;>)

Eventually someone will say that some actual fact occurred that differs with the "offfical" version, and that person will be arrested for "lying" about something that actually occurred.

Now if we could only do the same to journalists in the US.

Although by the end of the first month all the major media outlets would likely be shutdown.

The problem here is... the government reported the supposed crimes. Who knows what they actually did or the real reason they were detained.

I wouldnt mind that law being in the US... so long as it applies to everyone. Even those in the government :) Course the truth is subjective and fluid as more information comes to light about events.

Good Riddance?

You waste time, and govt resources, you should be jailed and fined here... and sometimes, this same stuff happens here. If you send fake tax documents to the IRS, they fuckin jail your ass AND you have to pay more (aka, a fine) lol

If starting rumors should result in jail time, we just need to put everyone in jail.

If they don't then it is unethical for Western corporations to do business with them. But of course Western corporations are unethical and don't give a damn about human rights.

What you all need to keep in context is the fact that the Chinese are about to launch another round of 'cultural education drive', which had a kick-start with enacting 'Good Samaritan act' in response to the 2 years olds' death by apathy in Foshan. A social media crackdown is now being rolled out, and this is followed with the CCP trying to revive the 'Confucian virtues' for its own good.

I wouldn't be too worried per se on Google in China, but rather I'd think twice on Alibaba and Yahoo.

Neither do unethical eastern corps. Which is worse, and why!? Discuss!

Does speaking the "truth" make one disappear forever in a black jail?

for being a country with a MASSIVE amount of people, why is it they havent over thrown their government yet...
