Scotland is ready to apply to ICANN for a dotcom domain name early in 2012 when the Top Level Domain names are up for grabs. Scotland will be applying for .scot to establish a ‘distinct online identity’ and secure the name before anyone else applies for the domain.

The new effort to have .scot created follows an announcement that applications for new top level domains (TLDs) will be sought in 2012.

Does anyone care about what the hell the end of an address is?

Good thing is I might be able to register my own TLD :D

great scott! you could have a website that is great.scot.

This is great! Now I know where to look for Bagpipes and Bagpipers!:D

His point was that each state has a second-level domain name under the .us TLD (though not all of them are actually used), not their own TLD.

Which is what the guy he quoted was saying. Scotland is part of the UK, but is shooting for it's own TLD. Granted, it's been trying for years to get it's own SLD under .uk, but it would still be like Alabama or Kansas trying to get their own TLD.

I think that was the point.

Every state has their initial before the .us domain though. Indiana is xxxxx.in.us, etc.

Perhaps Scottland should settle for a xxxxxx.scot.uk as well.

xxxxx.scot.uk
xxxxx.en.uk

and so on.

They've been trying for years to get one, but Nominet won't allow it.

No, because Scotland is actually a country. Alabama isn't.

They're closer to being a US state than a country at this point, thought it's possible for that to change. They're neither sovereign nor independent. They cannot directly control what taxes the UK levies, and do not have control over social security, defense, foreign matters, or broadcast communications. They have representation in the parliament of the UK as well as it's own legislative body. They have a First Minister as the leader of it's own governments, but accepts the Queen as their head of state.

I'm well aware of how the governmental body of the UK works. It is still a country, and with the SNP winning majority this year, will likely head towards independance in the next few years. Especially with Scotland's oil reserves (largest in the EU).

Wait...so in a socialist country...a nationalist party won... combine the two and...pretty sure they should be stopped...:p

Not enough of the "right" gene pool. ;)

You'll never see a group of people speaking Gàidhlig trying to take over the world.

Oh, I do.

I'm applying for the following immediately:

underthekilt.scot
fullof.scot
kilts-because-sheep-can-hear-zippers.scot
weeheavy.scot
fatbastard.scot

I figure I can make a killing.
