Wrap your head around this number.

Cumulatively, Americans spend more time on Facebook than on any other website. In the month of May alone, Nielsen estimates that the whole population spent a total of 53.5 billion minutes on the social network. That's also about the equivalent of 100,000 years, or 36.8 million days.

And this is why we haven't:

  • found the cure for cancer
  • eliminated hunger
  • figured out fusion

I'd say Facebook has very little to do with this... there are plenty of other reasons why none of these haven't been accomplished. Primarily:

Why cure cancer when the pharmaceutical industry makes (insert massive $ figure here) with drugs to keep you kicking. Even if the 'shot' (so to speak) cost $500,000 a pop to cure cancer, they wouldn't be raking in nearly the amount of money they do as things stand. This goes for a lot more than just cancer. I'd go on, but I'll stop. Anyway, I'm wondering when the first Facebook addiction clinic will open up. We have internet and gaming addiction, but that's too vague. lol

And I bet my roommate who isnt working right now ate up about half those minutes. He is on there every day all day long, it's a total addicition. I told him he needs to go to a Facebook Anonymous meeting.

You know I think that brings up a good point. With as many people as there are right now un- and under-employed, Facebook becomes a decent diversion...too broke to do anything with your friends, but at least you can live vicariously through FB.

If that is the number for Facebook, what about porn?

I'd imagine Facebook is higher considering you can Facebook at work, but not browse porn at work - well I can anyways. :D

I used to think this same thing when I logged on to Black Ops and saw stats like "68,000 years played". However, I then remembered that you have to take the demographic into account. The majority of Black Ops gamers (and Facebook users) are likely not the caliber of people who would be out to solve the world's problems anyway.

Personally, I think that most of these folks would wind up criminals if they weren't wasting their time on Facebook and/or video games.

That Nielsen data has to be incorrect. It's basically saying that 2/3's of the US is on FB more than an 4 hours day, each and every day of the month.

I don't strictly hate FB, I also have account, but I so hate when I see someone at work just sitting all day browsing and getting higher salary than all the rest who are working hard.

I think you exaggerate. It's not any different from browsing the [H] at work. When I get no request for help or the servers are functioning at 100%, I run through FB and the [H] to catch up with a few posts. It's not like I sit here and do nothing but stare at FB pages.

I meant it in a situation where you should work on stuff and you are browsing internet instead, at least it is daily practice where I work.

I know poeple who must text and be on facebook at all times. They have to pick their phone up every 2mins to look at somthing. And when they hang out with the person the next thing that comes up is

"Board"
"It dead out here"

I find it sad when you facebook at a bar or club. You should be on the hunt and calling people, not twiter or facebook people to let them know were you at so your house can get broken into.

I don't spend a second on any social networking sites. If I want to speak to you I'll visit or call on the phone. People no longer know how to interact with each other anymore.

Technically a forum is a social network site.

you got one of those too. my jobless roommate plays those stupid farming building games all day. I just recently started locking my comp before work.

If you're worried your friends might burglarize your home if you post that you're away, might I suggest new friends... ;)

when people eat as much as they do there, of course they cant eliminate hunger when people eat enough food a sitting to feed several people.

Number is screwed up I think. My phone keeps me on facebook 24/7 and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with most other android users(even iOS users maybe). So not all that time is actually spent using FB.

It's often been said that 'modern technology' will make our lives easier and set us 'free'.

No one ever said we'd do anything productive with that time

You're looking at this the wrong way. Any cancer drug would follow the AIDS drug model. The patient must take a massive cocktail of different drugs (each very expensive on it's own) that will slow or stop the disease...as long as you continue taking the expensive cocktail for the rest of your life. Can you say Cha-Ching!?

And then the chinese will copy it for free.

53 billion minutes a month
300 million Americans
30 days in a month

= 5.8 Minutes a day

whoopty do, lol.

I believe I read that a man was completely cured of HIV (or AIDS, not sure) for the first time just recently. Also, a small test completely cured leukemia as well; however it was said to be a very expensive method. Progress...

The difference between forums and social networks is quite severe. Both are online societies or communities, that's true, but they are not the same. Becuase social network is site designed to exchange personal related stuff while forums are public places to discuss and resolve various subjects. (basically you wont go on forum to talk to your friend or to date someone, although it is possible to meet someone and so on)

Without Facebook, half the people who have data plans on their phone would have them.
