AOL and Yahoo merging? This doesn't sound like a good idea at all. Honestly, can anyone name one time when two losers joined forces and suddenly became a winner?

Armstrong had been interested in a merger with Yahoo last year and was rebuffed while Bartz was at the helm, one person said. Her departure prompted him to reconsider the option, and, under one scenario now being considered, Yahoo would acquire AOL and Armstrong would become CEO of the combined company, the person said.

...eesh, join forces with aol? i didn't think yahoo was that bad off.

They fucked up big time when they didn't do the deal with Microsoft which was a blessing in disguise for Microsoft as Yahoo is nothing but another AOL these days.

Maybe they're thinking they'll both collapse under the combined weight of all that fail and become a black hole, sucking in all the cash in the solar system?

Im not really sure how anyone really still gives a crap about either of those companies..

Im pretty sure if they merge, nothing will change, and still no one will care..

maybe so. i still have an old aol email address that i use from time to time, and the interface sort of resembles yahoo mail anymore. too many useless features and other gizmos cluttering up the service. their homepages are also pretty similar.

What's an AOL?

Seriously, how are they even around anymore? They were awesome in 1998 but I can't for the life of my figure out who would use them now and for what.

So AOL found another sucker to leach off and stay afloat for a few years. haha

Except unlike Timewarner which could afford to lose a bit, this will likely finally sink the Yahoo ship.

I was using AOL in 1998 and I can assure that it was not awesome at that time.

it's probably people like me. i had a dial up account in 1999 and my parents eventually created screennames within that account. aol is setup so the first account is the primary and all subsequent accounts are secondary - meaning that i can't get rid of my account without deleting all secondary accounts. my parents refuse to make the switch to gmail, ergo my aol account lingers.

Two great, irrelevant companies joining together? Sounds good to me.

Fixed that for you.
As much as I like Yahoo! (i have emails with them and use some of their other services), they have had no luck with CEOs recently....

doesn't mean you cant switch to gmail...

I have both, a Yahoo e-mail address (which is actually a @geocities.com address) and a AOL e-mail address (which is actually a @netscape.net address). I connect to both daily through IMAP, so I don't really need to sign in to their respective websites.
I would feel sad if both mailboxes collided into just one. Both had been reliable for more that 10 years.

new names?

YAOL?
AOHOO?
YAHOOL?
AOYAH?
YAHAO?
YAHAOL?
YAHOL?
YAL?
AOY?

The mind reels. I wont sleep tonight.

Time Warner AOL = FAIL
Yahoo's ultimate fail while they were still losing lots of market share = "Yahoo rejected a $47.5 billion offer from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) in 2008."

why is aol even alive at this point, what do they even offer now a days lol

So 6months to a year after they merge,I wonder which one will get sold off as a spinoff at a fraction of the buying price while the parent company (whichever one that ends up being parent) makes claim to their shareholders that they made a wise business decision.

John Elway was a MUCH better quarterback than Shanahan a coach.

Those two wouldn't have been able to sniff the Superbow without Terrell Davis. They rode his back hard, so hard that his body finally broke down the year after the Broncos' 2nd superbowl win.

As far as Yahoo and AOL merger, talk about a trainwreck of a wedding.

Didn't AOL buy up the Ultra Liberal Fluffington Post?
Now Yahoo will have the faggoty power to sit on a lollypop and tell you what flavor it is!.

I agree, Terrell Davis was the man in his day, it was a shame he didn't have a longer carver. For a while Shanahan was a master of assessing running backs, Denver seemed to always have a 1000 yard rusher.

I support this merger 100% I can't think of a faster way to finally be rid of both companies

Well it was for me but that was when I first got on the internet. I scoffed at the internet during most of the 90's. Mainly because I was staying drunk and playing quarter poker all night but I thought it was just a fad.....like cell phones. (Id like to take this moment to tell everyone to NEVER take investment advice from me).

So I was a little late to the party with the world wide web and AOL was my first experience. Ill always remember the sounds and jingles of it and all the cool graphics and icons it had.....oh yeah and discovering internet porn for the first time! Ah, memories.

Wait, People still use Yahoo?

I dropped Yahoo like a shit covered ton of stinky, sticky bricks when they had that system error in 2008 while I was in BCT and lost almost 10 years of emails I was too stupid not to have backed up on the Gmail account I hadn't created untill I got screwed with Yahoo :( Went to Gmail in 08' and will never go back.

Plus I have my own domain now for business so thats a + :)

F%&@ YOU YAHOOCHIE!!!

I don't get the talk of this merger. Google responded very quickly by releasing their own smartphone operating system, because they knew once the iPhone was released, the internet would gradually start shifting to the mobile sector. Microsoft is a bit late to the ballgame with their Windows 7/7.5 Phone OS, but it's a surprisingly strong contender, and a phone OS that I feel is a great addition to the competition.

Where are Yahoo and AOL in this race? Absolutely nowhere. Both companies still seem stuck in the 1990's when it comes to how people access the internet. Yahoo is probably a bit ahead of AOL, as their search market share internationally is quite strong, but in 9 years when the Microsoft-Yahoo alliance is up for reconsideration, I fully expect Microsoft so drop them like a bad habit.

Mark my words. Yahoo and AOL will die as companies because they refuse to admit da times be changin', mon!

I have customers (usually old people) who still pay AOL because they think AOL owns the internet. I kid you not, I can think of 3 different customers off the top of my head who had Comcast or FIOS and were still paying AOL for internet because they thought they had to.

i could of swore both companies had gone out of business already <.<
....very interesting.....very interesting indeed
