Sony Shows Wearable 3-D Personal Theater

What ever happened to sun glasses with a screen built in? I'd like something like that a lot more. Thhis thing looks ridiculous. For $800 you could just buy a projector.

Is it compatible with nVidias 3D vision kit?

i dont see any audio head phones?

well if it has audio and you can hook up a console... perfect gaming headgear if it's not to heavy.

hey factor in motion play... crude vr simulator?

teens needing a date probebly witll be the biggest users of this.. but I doubt they will wear it on date? Im guessing since you said it you might? :)

$800 is far to much money when you can get a so-so Big Screen TV for about $800 nowdays, and 'sunglass" style 3d glasses kits are as low as $50 in some spots... it wont be top of the line, but it will be somthing more than one person can use.
I think the big question is why? there is almsot no 3D content out there.. I looked into normal 3D glasses of the kids as they enjoy it but there are only a few movies in 3D.. so what would one watch?

It seems like it could be great for watching sports. Needing to have your head plugged in to your cable receiver could be a little awkward though.

"The footage before the viewer — a music video of a Japanese singer in the demonstration for reporters in Tokyo — is crystal-clear and feels like peering into a dolls house in which a real-life tiny singer is moving."

meh?

I'm thinking that doesnt meet the markets expectations

Define Wearable? Anything that looks this atrocious is far from wearable, lol. I would only ever use this indoors... In private... Where I could use an actual 65" screen, lol.

I don't know why people think these look atrocious. Visors are extremely popular in Asian culture.

If it can do 1080p.. and its oled, how would this work as a monitor?

$800 is too much. A good 3D capable LCD with nVidia's 3D kit (glasses included) is something like $500. They get is down to $200 or so (and working on PCs) and it would be perfect for some occasional 3D gaming without the need to spring for a full 3D setup.

Would also be very nice for 2P console gaming without a split screen, but meh, consoles.

This is a follow up to the prototype they showed at the CES show this year.
3D glasses are coming the OLED technology has some maturing to do.
OLED display panels can be very thin, flexible, and even stretchable!
But right now the tech is on the expensive side but it will drop in price as more players get in the game.
(just like LCD)

Once it does, expect to see the Apple iWear 3D. Then the rest of the manufacturers will scramble to clone it; even though many of them had older iterations of the same technology years before.
The tech game is more and more; innovate or or be left behind.

Too expensive still, but I like the idea if only because I'm thinking of the possibilities of using this combined with something like Track IR for an ad hoc VR gaming experience.

The device is not recommended for young teens as it can completely ruin their chances of ever getting a date.

Sounds like a selling point to the parents of teenagers! :D

Ya know - we're still waiting for the VR style gaming head gear that the movies promised us. All it'd take is a nice heads up display with head tracking (TrackIR or whatever?) technology.

You know I am sitting here trying to imagine a situation in which one would want to use this thing over the alternatives and I can't come up with one. You can't really move around with it on as it blocks your vision so why would you opt to wear this over watching a 3D TV? Cost aside this seems like one of those things someone built just because they could without ever asking if they should.

Forgot to mention the miniature screen wipers for the sweat caused from the heavy breathing .:D

finally someone with some imagination. This would be the shit for flight sims and racing games, hell maybe even fps's eventually.

My plan (if this is compatible with nvidia's 3d stuff) is to use this combined with a track ir and/or kinect to create a basic 3d setting within udk and a real doll(or similar) and allow a person to screw whoever they want in the closest thing to real virtual reality we can get. I would create very realistic looking 3d models within zbrush and allow people to send in pictures of who they want to screw and create 3d models based on that using generic base models that are tweaked to fit the mold, using the pictures sent for the actual textures using the spotlight tool within zbrush..... and I'm completely serious.

I need resolution specs. And I want to bring my own headphones. If I'm buying an $800 head mounted display, I won't be using crappy bundled headphones. Unless Sony didn't compromise on sound, which is doubtful.

I'd get one if it were (much) cheaper. It's interesting as a curiosity but the price of an HDTV is hard to swallow. It would never get as much use but it might be entertaining for the occasional game when there's no one else around.

From Google:

"...equipped with two 0.7-inch sized OLED displays (1280 x 720-pixel) and 5.1ch dynamic audio headphone used to show 750-inch virtual 3D movie..."

really?
Why do companies keep making the same tiny screens with crap rez? Gimme two 2" w/ minimum 1920x1080 ffs. If they want an immersive experience just do it right.

I confidently predict that this will be terrible and fail.

I am also quite sure that I will buy it anyway, because I must have all the things.

I think a lot of that has to do with viewing distance. If you had 1080 on your phone for example its mostly wasted because the improvement in resolution isn't noticeable on a 3.7" screen, unless you have beyond capable human eyes.

Secondly these are 0.5" screens, so the fact that its 720p, is probably going to look like 2000p or some other random number. However what concerns me is it emulates a 750" screen. So how this all boils down in the maths and numbers is anyones guess.

Who cares what this looks like? I don't do my gaming in public, looking to pick up women, I do it at home in front of a PC by myself. And it isn't like FPS gaming in front of a huge monitor, wearing a headset/mic and thrashing your mouse around is a real sexy look, either. I think the idea in general is good, not too sure about the execution here.

Cost vs. diminishing returns, presumably. At these sizes we're talking about some 2000 pixels per inch while going from 0.7 inches to 2 inches is an almost threefold increase in size.

the pixel pitch on this must be incredibly dense, a 1080p resolution would be overkill with a 0.7inch

view distance will be 20 meters (65ft ) for this 750 inch screen
so 1280 x 720 is plenty

I recently completed an eyefinity setup and have seen how cool it can be. At 800 dollars, I would expect some sort of wrap around/peripheral vision to take the multi-monitor experience of PC to the next level. But for a 720p screen that close (75 inches from 2 meters away?).... If it were 1080p I might buy it on sale, but no way would I pay $800 for 720p. If they dropped the price to maybe $400 or less, I'd probably buy it (though, I'd wish they had gone with a wider ratio screen than they did).

its 750 inch not 75 and 20 meters view distance ( 65ft )
it's like movie theater experience
and its 720p res on 0.7 INCH oled screen

I love the potential of something like this. This is not that expensive about the same as 3 decent gaming monitors or one nice 1080p plasma. Plus isnt OLED supposed to be the ultimate in flat panel tech.

Like SXO said head tracking in a FPS would be insane and would be the next step over something like NV surround.

I really want to try these I hope they are on display in a local store.

I can't believe all of the people down on this. This has the potential to be amazing and revolutionary. It could also be a gigantic flop, but I'll ignore that for the moment. Imagine a true movie theater experience for your favorite game, sport or movie while being able to enjoy the comfort of your own recliner and privacy(do I really need to wear underwear for monday night football?) of your own home. It also opens up a whole world of motion and head tracking for gaming or vr simulations. I hope they are able to pull this off and it is as good as I am imagining it could be.
