Holy cow, Google spent $2 million lobbying lawmakers and regulators last quarter?

This year's second quarter lobbying bill is by far the largest that Google has run up since opening its Washington, D.C., office in 2005 to push its agenda. The previous high came during the first three months of the year when Google's poured $1.48 million into its lobbying efforts.

That's it? Last year Congress reported lobbying $ received of $3.5 billion, which averages out to $6.5 million per Congressperson. Google is barely spending enough to keep one in their pocket, better up their game.

Not really the best way to look at things, to break it down to a per/CP, as these are just the lobbying not the campaign contributions. Nevertheless, it looks to be an increase for them from last year:

That is not a lot of money for a company its size.

$2M isn't a lot for legal costs for that. Drop in the bucket.

You guys are missing the point. Usually the highest spender is big pharma. Pfizer spent about 13M last year, the association of big pharmas sent 27M or so. The pharmaceuticals all together spent ~250M and that is JUST on lobbying.

Lobbying is not campaign contributions, PAC donations, etc:

So you're saying what exactly?

That Google is spending right up there with some of the big boys of lobbying. That it is not just a small amount when taking into account what lobbying is and how much Google has stepped up in looking to throw around its weight.

And WOW at the US Chamber of Commerce spending $385 million in 2010 on lobbying. That's all just icing on the cake of the individual companies lobbying.

$8 million per year isn't that much in relation to the "big spenders." To even crack the top 20 would mean you're spending over $13.25M / year.

In the top 20 you have a bunch of associations/trade groups/etc, but if you look at a sector by sector approach and you look at the relative spending in said sectors to overall spending, they have a. increased their spending on lobbying, and their spending at a pretty solid clip.

Also, PG&E spent 40M+ last year but that's out of line for them.

Yeah...at least they know where 'member dues' go to :D

Love how we has a nation have deconstructed bribery and given it a nice happy sounding name like "lobbying"

When you add money and/or power, everything sounds nicer!

Bribery? No, it's "lobbying".
Extortion? No, its a "settlement for copyright infringement".
Insanity? No, it's "eccentric".
Sexual harrassment? Child molestation? No, it's "transportation security". You don't want your plane blown up right?
Censorship? No, it's "homeland security". Can't have terrorists watching streams of the Super Bowl.

Lobbying, otherwise known as legalized bribery...

So much for do no evil..

It's the "lobbying" you don't see that costs the big bucks.
Our Government is hopelessly corrupt. (both sides folks)

2 million isnt shit. seriously, thats a dime in the big bucket.

Wait.. lobbying? You mean personal bribes to congress-people?

Isn't that what lobbying is?
