The Supreme Court will soon be ruling on using GPS tracking without a warrant and indecency on TV. The first one seems like a pretty big deal, not so sure about the TV thing though.

The Supreme Court has added a couple of high-profile constitutional challenges to its lineup of cases for next term: One looking at governmental regulation of television content and the other dealing with the authority of police to use a GPS device to track a suspect's movements without a warrant.

Disband the FCC and require a warrant for any kind of GPS tracking, wiretapping, or planned searches. Done. Now where is my Supreme Court pension?

I wonder how many hits there are today for "woman's nude buttocks on a 2003 episode of ABC's NYPD Blue." in Google.

I would appoint you to the Supreme Court in a heart beat.

What about employers that require you to carry their cell phone 24/7. Then turn on GPS tracking on that phone? They never get warrants, and so far as I can tell you cant do anything about it but quit your job.

That's not the same thing though. It's the company's phone and they have the right to know where it is at all times.

There's a big distinction between your work doing it for the purpose of knowing where you are vs the government/law enforcement tracking you. One you can always quit if you don't like it, the other you can't quit.

No on disbanding the FCC. They actually do provide value, though they do need some re-alignment, and mission scoping though. And better customer service...(dealing with a contact change for my company and it's taken over 6 months now...)

Totally agree on the warrants.

I wish they'd clean up broadcast TV some, I really don't like the language (private Ryan gets a pass) and sex on it. They funny thing is, I'll be the first to look at porn and I swear like a sailor. I just don't think it should be on broadcast TV. Yes, I'm a hypocrite, I know.

So get a television with a V-chip and activate it.

Luckily, the government is here to save you from the realities of life.

Disband the FCC? Yeah, just let those airwaves regulate themselves.

They actually do a lot of good technical stuff behind the scenes. Maintaining "decency" of broadcast TV is not their primary mission.

Some of what they do is fine, a lot of it isn't needed, and most of it can be done better.

Exactly...there are plenty of ways for parents (or anyone) to decide what is shown in their own home.

I don't even have kids, I just don't want that shit on broadcast TV period. When I say "broadcst TV" I'm talking about CBS, NBC and ABC in particular. Though any channel you can get with an Antenna would fall under this too I suppose. Again, I'm a hypocrite, I know.

You don't need kids to have V-chipped televisions. Buy one and your problems are gone. Don't impose your morals on everyone else.

Out of curiosity why does Saving Private Ryan get a free pass?

Because it was real or something?

They usually run it on regular TV on Memorial Day. From what I've read and been told, it's about as hostorically accurate a movie as their is (meaning how the war was was in general, not the actual story of them Saving Private Ryan) .They don't edit it in any way. Basically a tribute to the men and women that have given/are giving their service and/or lives in the US military.

Logic wouldn't work well in the gov.'t. :p

Off topic, I just realized it's my 6-yr. anniv. on [H].

Lack of children is why I put (or anyone) in my previous statement as in: anyone that doesnt wish to view something on tv has plenty of ways to not view it. Also I am not sure I follow your logic, as you say you are fine with porn and swearing but do not want it on "broadcast tv". (this stance seems to mean you are trying to keep someone from watching it.)

My point is, it doesnt matter who you are trying to "protect" from such material. If you personally (or anyone else :p) dont want to see it then you have options. And if you are worried someone else may see it they too have the same options. The beauty of personal responsibility is that everyone can benefit and enjoy what they choose or dont choose to watch.

I'll gladly trade a couple "gruesome decaying body being dissected ruing my dinner" scenes for a shot of some nice boobs.

I still want to watch the shows, I just wish they would stop having every program start with a 10 minute sex scene to rope the pathetic suckers in. I had no problem with Battlestar Galactica, which had a sex scene every 15 minutes, because it actually made sense in that show. Every program now seems like: " ***10 minute sex scene*** - And now back to your regularly scheduled program."

European and Mexican television show sex scenes all the time, yet American TV stations can't.

Wasn't real, not even loosely based on a true story. In fact if you pay attention it's one big continuity error. Private Ryan is supposed to remembering everything that happened, but he wasn't there for 85% of the movie's events.

Why it is shown uncut/unedited: It's a very patriotic movie. Any edits would significantly impact the conveyance of patriotism in the film.

Take another WWII movie, like say The Thin Red Line (it's a better movie than Saving Private Ryan), and they would chop it to bits, because it has anti-war themes running throughout it.

So really it's just hypocrisy.

The problem with this argument is you are talking about show content merit. Which is a perfectly legitimate argument outside the realm of censorship discussions. If you are saying that we need decency rules to help curb what some may deem "unworthy plot points", (or lack thereof) then again this is not a regulatory issue it is a personal one. You can simply find another show to watch. Or possibly write to the shows creators/directors/writers with your concerns for their inability to stick to the plot without resorting to cheap thrills.

As you pointed out Battlestar Galactica had no problem creating a believable plot line that included adult themes and material. So such an argument is more to your second comment about "shitty television". Unfortunately using decency rules to keep a poorly written show from using sex (or other material) to prop-up their efforts is not the way to go. We just need less bad writing on television not more restrictions on creativity/choice.
