If a bill to be introduced by Texas Representative Joe Barton gains traction, legalized poker betting could be back on the table soon. The bill would introduce legal betting on poker sites and establish a federal regulatory body to oversee its operation.

There are probably going to be a lot of catches with this bill if it does get introduced at all. Right now it's not up on Thomas so it's just guesstimation at this point.

Either way this wont be enough. The US will still be violating WTO rules.

Im assuming its been illegal to save us from ourselves, especially now since we are trying to take ourselves out of this crappy economy we are in. The last thing we need is for our citizens to throw away what little money they have. Its too easy to go to vegas and just throw away money, trust me, Ive been there. It would now be 100000x easier to lose your life savings all in the comfort of your own semen-stained chair if they made it legal online.

Why exactly is online gambling illegal? I guess we're not adults all of a sudden...

The US has such a mish-mash of gambling laws, where each state defines their own rules. Then you have indian reservations, which have their own gambling rules. And anything that crosses state lines, like online gambling, gets complex in a hurry.

Taxes are another big issue, becasue the federal and state governements are going to want their share of the income generated from gambling.

Yeah, this ^^^ 100%. The LV casinos always put money up to stop/slow down these types of bills, for obvious reasons. In CA we had an expansion of Indian gaming, and the Vegas casinos put up big money to try and get the measure to fail.

Online poker in and of itself isn't illegal. There was a bill a few years ago that made it illegal for banks to process transactions to offshore gambling sites. Since then several states have written laws about online poker with various levels of success. They mostly just want to be able to tax it.
