My Friend just got an hp P410 to use with his SATA drives, but its not detecting any of them, (its on the latest firmware) & has a SFF-8087 Breakout cable.

i have troubleshooted it down to what i think is the cable...
does it need a forward, or a reverse breakout cable & also whats the difference? & can you physically tell them apart?

I posted this on another forum...

reposted here to help you out

========
SAS sata cables are either HOST or TARGET based.

ie if you want to go from SFF-8087 (mini Sas) to SATA connections...
then the cables are wired

HOST (sff-8087)
to
TARGET (SATA) Target being the drives.

Wired arse about they WILL NOT WORK.

HOST (SATA) means you want the controller to have 4 x SATA ports)
and
TARGET (SFF-8087) means the Minisas connector is going to connect to a backplane...... not directly to drives.

anyways for your interest

Download this intel document and read page 16 and 17, you will see the different way a MINISAS sff-8087 cable can be wired.... Host or Target....and why it wouldn't work

this is what i'm reccomending he should get:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3ware-cbl-sff8087ocf-10m-sff-8087-to-discrete-forward-breakout-cable

that's right yeah?

these are the ones he bought... they look right.. but no mention of host to target, or forward/reverse

Always worth asking the sellers to confirm they are the correct type.

Like I mentioned to someone else, these sellers are not native enlish speaking.... so there is always the chance they described the item wrong.

But yes, the 1st linked ones LOOK like they would be correct.;)

my only concern would that they are 1metre long.......and 1metre is the maximum length recommended for SATA.......SAS is much longer.

Maybe if he can go shorter in the case.... ask if they have say 70-75cm ones.

.

I've got those exact 3Ware 1 meter cables for my IBM M1015. I bought them specifically because they were branded, so I was sure I was buying the right stuff. They work fine.

10M is 1 meter, 05M and 06M are shorter (actually recommended if you don't need more length).
