++++ is running a sale on a XFX 6950 model, how do I know if it'll unlock into a 6970?

Can't link to it because stupid forums block it.

First it has to be a reference design 2GB model. And no.. even all those do not unlock. But the success rate is well over 90%. Even without the shaders unlocked. Overclocked most can still match or even exceed stock 6970 speeds. The unlocked shaders for the reduced cost were simply a free bonus for me.

How do you know if a card is a reference design? I took a screenshot of the page:

That is reference design right there; I have two unlocked to verify. All the reference 2GB 6950s look like that with different logos for different manufacturers.

Are you sure it's a reference card? I'll know when I get it tomorrow morning but I've read on the forums that this card isn't reference.

Whomever stated that this card is not a reference design is misinformed, and it wouldn't be the first time. I own two of them, and I can tell you 100% that the design is the reference design.

btw; you can tell by the pics on Newegg's site here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=14-150-518-Z06&SpinSet=14-150-518-RS&ISList=14-150-518-Z01%2c14-150-518-Z02%2c14-150-518-Z03%2c14-150-518-Z04%2c14-150-518-Z05%2c14-150-518-Z06&VSList=14-150-518-V01%2c14-150-518-V02&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16814150518&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=XFX%20HD-695A-CNFC%20Radeon%20HD%206950%202GB%20256-bit%20GDDR5%20PCI%20Express%202.1%20x16%20HDCP%20Ready%20CrossFireX%20Support%20Video%20Card%20with%20Eyefinity

Click on the top right thumbnail to enlarge and it clearly shows "AMD" above the slot connection. That is only stamped on reference PCBs.

It is painfully obvious the XFX 6950 product you posted is NOT the same as the XFX posted above.

It is also painfully obvious that it is not a reference card.

So I got my card... but it's nothing like in the picture, and is clearly not reference. The cooler is much different (it's all grey)...

This is the exact model I got... tried to flash the 6970 BIOS but didn't work. So pissed. I am returning it.

Got this one instead, which I am 100% sure is reference.

The XFX reference card is the HD-695A-CNFC
Non-reference is HD-695X-CNFC

It's because the reference cards are made by AMD, and the non-reference by XFX

If you look on the screenshot in post 3, although the picture is of the reference card, the model number in the right is the HD-695X-CNFC, the non-reference. So you got the right card, but the wrong picture. Thus the "Actual product might not be exactly as shown" disclaimer. Bummer. Hope they are cool about letting you return it.

It's ++++ that fucked up. They put up the wrong picture with a typo in the part number, which led me to order the card thinking it was reference. The product I received had a completely different picture than what was shown on their store.

They apologized profusely. Accepted my RMA request and will not charge a 15% stocking fee, so it's all good.

OOps, it is painfully obvious that I cant read :D

Sucks that they sent you a different card than you ordered. I too would be super pissed. :(

Well, my replacement ASUS 6950 flashed wonderfully. Had to use the MS-DOS method (flash through command prompt) but all seems well.

I just ordered a U3011 as well, and a second ASUS 6950 is coming here to replace the XFX one.

6970 in CF for 550$ + U3011 = heaven?

Even less if you buy used, can be had for $460 all in.
