Just purchased a 3Tb Hitachi 7K3000 since I need to reduce the number of drives I'm using due to the SATA2 issue.

Installed it on one of the Intel 6Gb/s SATA3 ports and discover windows sees it as 746Gb ( 1 platter ? ).
Check the BIOS and it's 3Tb there, check the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software which also sees it as 3Tb. But Windows isn't having it.

So do the logical thing and swap it with a drive on the Marvel SATA ports, reboot and immediately it works.

Wondering whether this is an acknowledged issue and if it has a time frame to be fixed.

Would it be better to add a U3s6 to get more ports and use your current drive?

But yes, I would like to see it work on the Intel 6Gb/s ports. That was promised, IIRC.

I was going to have to buy another drive soonish anyway so it made more sense to not waste money on something I won't need once they've sorted out the recall.

Though obviously that was before I realised that there isn't a single decent port on a P8P67 motherboard. ( Marvell writes are atrocious which is particularly painful now I'm copying in excess of 2Tb through one ).

By the way what is it with people desperate to make excuses for manufacturers, they tell us what the product is and we buy it to do that, yet somehow it's supposed to be ok for us to waste hours of our precious free time debugging issues that they know about but won't tell us about, and then figuring out work arounds that cost us money.

I'm glad you found this out....I was looking at buying larger drives myself. I wonder what happens if you put your 2 TB drive on a USB 3 port? Could this be a Windows thing?

Its def not a windows thing
windows can do anything and everything with a GPT drive
you are going to have to wait for Intel 10.5 XXXX RST

I guess you know the 4 doors you must pass thru for >2.19TB drives
Initialize totally blank HDD as GPT
Win 7 X64 only
AHCI only
Intel RST 10.1.0.1008

Is the Intel 10.5 software or firmware? How will the upgrade be rolled out?

Running RST software version 10.0.0.1046, could that be the issue?

Edit:
It is the issue, upgraded to 10.1.0.1008 and it's working fine.

If you install 10.1.0.1008 in Win 7, it is indeed a Windows thing, if that is a driver and not firmware.

Still, that's a nit and this is good to know!

I have four Hitachi 3TB drives. I wanted to put them in my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 motherboard and use the Intel Rapid Storage Technology - RST - on board RAID to run the four drives in RAID 10. But I cannot do this as the RST software does not allow for drives > 2TB in the Intel RST.

What is the problem? Well, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology version that I have (which is the latest version available) 10.1.0.1008, cannot do any RAID stuff with the new 3 TB drives. So there is never a chance for me to key in "ctrl I" when booting up so I could set up RAID with these drives. Ctrl-I just doesn't work... I can't bring up the RST BIOS screens.

Until Intel releases a modern version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology - RST, do not waste your time trying to get 3TB drives to work in RAID. Only AHCI at this point.

system: windows 7 Pro
overclocked 2600K at 4.6 Ghz
stable with folding at home running big advance work units

Anyone know anyone at Intel with an ETA for fixing this little issue? Anyone know if Intel cares about this failure of their RAID controllers to work with modern drives?

that is a well known issue with the Intel RST
there is a thread about it on the asus vip website forum - even specifically about 4 Hitachi 3TB in RAID 0 (which are now no longer avail because Seagate bought Hitachi)
The Intel 10.5.0.1022 drivers are out on the ASUS site for the Z68 mobo V-Pro
These were supposed to fix the >2.19TB drives in RAID problem
But I dont do raid so i cant confirm

I also have Hitachi 3TB, a dual boot Win 7 X64 Win 7 X64 and its hard clone for my CAD CAM stuff and with my B2 deluxe I HAD TO set the drive I wanted to boot as "bootmanager" option, and then the drive would get the UEFI strap on the HDD icon on the EZ page.
I now have my B3 board and I noticed to my shock, the bootmanager option is gone!!! (came with 1305 bios - which I left alone)
I am going thru some dental work now, so I have not tried loading my Hitachi's yet because if they dont boot now, my head will explode.

There are only three possibilities now:
The bios recognizes a GPT drive and the bootmanager option appears
The bios recognizes the GPT X64 drive and automatically goes into UEFI mode from default MBR
The revision in the Southbridge changed something

The crazy thing is that on the B2 mobo, I had the bootmanager as a boot option all the way back to the original shipping bios. How the hell can a specific bios on one revision of the mobo work different on another revision? Makes no sense. The change in the Southbridge chip - thats where the RST channel is?

Seagate bought Hitachi? Crap I haven't kept up with things.

EDIT: I read Wester Digital is buying Hitachi.. so which one is it?

Correct you are.............
Its WDC that BOUGHT Hitachi Storage
http://venturebeat.com/2011/03/07/western-digital-buys-hitachi-global-storage-technologies/
I posted it from memory, brainfart with fact that Seagate BOUGHT Samsung HDD
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/19/us-samsung-seagate-idUSTRE73I1CG20110419
And WDC made an offer for Seagate
http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/12/02/drive.maker.also.rejected.offers.from.tpg.capital/
Both brands are history

And i was also wrong about bootmanager option being gone in boot page options - it only shows when you have Win 7 X64 media, or a GPT drive. Slight change in later BIOS.
And you cannot boot a UEFI GPT drive without using the Winbootmanager option

Crap.. so now Seagate pics up samsung. Wonder what that will do to the timing of the 4gb drive release. I want to pickup a 3tb but no idea which one to get.

Sorry to go off topic!

I swore I would never buy another Seagate again after the firmware disaster with the 320 GB drives a few years ago, but I guess I have no choice now.
Good 'ol monopoly capitalism. Buy up all the competition and be the last soldier standing.

Well, their latest 3TB 7200rpm drive doesnt seem too bad, if its reliable
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/seagate_barracuda_xt_3tb/
And they have announced first workable 1TB platter, which means a 3 platter 3TB drive. Why they would utilize it first in an external drive is a mystery to me.

Couldnt the drive just be yanked out and used internally? I am leaning towards the Hitachi which has been the cheapest or maybe WD. I don't trust Seagate drives. I personally have had no problems with my setup but run into issues at work all the time.

hmmm.........
just checked, looks like they are selling them naked
Hey look at that suggested retail!!!
http://www.amazon.com/Barracuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-Bare-OEM-ST33000651AS/dp/tech-data/B004VLZSHE
Geez! Look at those comments on newegg - one guy 2 DOA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...TC-Froogle-_-Hard+Drives-_-Seagate-_-22148736

Of course since its 3TB most peeps are too stupid to know how to use it - efi 100MB partition, bootmgr option, UEFI HDD select, and Win 7 X64

And if you want Hitachi better buy quick - seriously doubt they will keep either brand name or drive itself

Are these the ones actually using 1tb platters?

EDIT: I picked up the Hitachi External 3tb which has the 7200rpm Hitachi in it. 119.99 shipped with newegg right now. Hard to beat that deal. I will just yank the drive out of the enclosure and run it in my box so it stays cool. Drive alone is 180 on thier site so this is a pretty good deal.

No, they are not the 1TB platters in the XT
They will appear in the next series 3-4-5TB drives

And yes the vendors are all dumping these 2 drive brands because they will disappear - get em while they are hot. I paid $199 each for mine. Was tempted to spend $350 for 3TB Ultrastar with 2 million hour MTBF

Edit: @USB 2 I seriously doubt its 7200RPM - where did you see that?

I know, I was thinking the same. Tons of ppl are opening them up. All newegg reviews are reporting 7200rpm... really dumb move to stick a 7200rpm drive in a USB enclsoure but whatever. I wont be mad if its 5400rpm which is what I had orginally wanted anyways. I still save 20$ if its 5400rpm.

2 weeks after seagates purchase of samsung, seagate announced they were going to release 4TB drives with 4x1TB platters.. go figure a couple months before that samsung announced they would be releasing 4TB drives by the end of the year. my guess is seagate will continue the samsung name but get rid of the maxtor name since the name has already been destroyed. as far as WD goes with hitachi, i think they will continue the name on the enterprise side but not use it on the consumer side. but thats all speculation at this point since no one knows what either company is going to do.

FYI.. I just got my External and it does in fact have the 7200rpm Hitachi that newegg sells for 180$... got it for $120 shipped! I was worried about noise but this thing is pretty quiet.

wow, thats a hella bargain!
good for you - lol
If you are goona use it as booter and have prob, just holler, I have this crap down pat
