Oracle announced recently the launch of its SPARC Supercluster enterprise computing system. The new supercomputer is 3 times faster than the old record holder, IBM’s DB2.

It's hard to evaluate the validity of the performance characterizations without being able to see some truly independent benchmarks and real-world usage scenarios, but the results still look mightily impressive on paper.

I think the PPD is $60M but if you accept the leasing agreements, etc., you'll get a discount to about $30M.

Re: performance, this used a 27 SPARC RAC cluster to get three times the performance of IBM's cluster of 3 power 780's. I think that it's 9x the computers, and 9x the # of cores... for 3x the performance.
