Please Mooch Wi-Fi in a Respectable Manner

They missed the point. "Porn" might not embarrass him to his peers, but posting about his "gay porn" collection probably would. :D

Or if you are going to steal, don't have open shares. Guaranteed that the people who do this are the same ones who claim they got hacked every couple of months.

I'm tempted to open up a captive portal on my wireless and direct all the people to donkey porn. :D

That would be defamation (libel) and therefore unwise to do. Actually, this very well could be defamation too. A perfectly placed lawsuit would make your tactic very punitive for yourself. As Kyle said secure the effin network. That should have been done in the beginning.

They're both idiots. Quit sharing your porn out over an open network dude. Dumb girls secure your wireless network and quit bitching until you do.

Gotta love it when armchair lawyers weigh in with legal advice based on a misunderstanding of something they read on wikipedia.

That's nothing compared to this old broad who called the Law on a neighbor for stealing her WiFi and slowing it down, which was actually another neighbors WiFi she herself was poaching, that he kindly setup for guests... and his poor neighbors.. to use free of charge.

To top things off, the old lady in question was a secretary for the local cable/internet co-op, before she was fired.

Ohio rednecks FTW!

looks like the message was posted in the elevator. Looks like its a moving week or something. LAWL!

What's wrong with Amy Reid?
Nothing, nothing at all.

It continues to baffle me why people don't password secure their networks. I wouldn't ever leave my front door unlocked, and I sure as hell won't let someone mooch my wireless.

Yay for it requires a password to join.

Sure if you set it up that way. I'm just saying thanks to Win7, it's so much easier to network shared folders. :-D

As for why someone shares his porn folder, well he probably keeps his porn on a media server to view them anywhere in the house ;-)

Who's house? :p

I wonder if the iPhone has an app for that.

iSpank LOL

Maybe some people like to share. I guess you could get a silly sense of control if you shared your networks and could do anything you want with your guests.

Don't make me bring up your gay porn collection too.

Got some with donkeys and sandpaper....want to come over??? ;)

There was nothing to misunderstand and no that was not a wiki moment. Hmn, Marriam-Webster did not change anything. So, to say "his gay porn," would be punitive for PXC. Add a wookie, and some Twinkie the guy would win easily. As for the girls I said could. So, I think you totally did not read my reply to PXC's post.

props to the chicks next door for continuing to share their internets. I hope they never bump into someone who downloads child porn. that could get ugly.

i have a neighbor who does the same- open, unsecured 15mbit broadband. 10x faster than my piece of shit AT&T dsl. makes for fast porn

Its public domain, anyone who connects to that WiFi can see his share. Hope he's in a sharing mood, well, either way, whether he is or not, he's still sharing!

Homegroups have passwords.

Fine. But based on the fact that the girls knew someone was on their network, they must have looked at the network map (network icon > open network and sharing center > see full map). Using this method, you can locate shared folders and devices on the network. If the guy wasn't using homegroup, then he simply shared his folder with full access to "everyone" with no password assigned to his computer's user account.

Homegroup's easy, but so is setting up a normal share. Windows 7 makes it a whole lot easier for amateur home network setup.

Homegroups have passwords.

They have SUPER passwords!! I can not get Homegroup to work on any of my 64 bit PC's. Even with the password on the screen of one computer and type it on the other computer it says "password invalid".

I use Windows Home Server to basically do that same thing....thats actually called a "shared folder". But you need a password for that as well.

And I don't mind people using my wireless (I had it unsecured for years), but AT LEAST don't use the default Microsoft workgroup if your gonna let anyone join.

If you're stupid enough to leave your wireless open, then you deserve whatever you come across as a result. Further you deserve whatever happens to you as a result. Meaning? In todays lawsuit happy society it's YOUR dumb ass that will be sued for illegal downloads. Think the MPAA / RIAA and their stooges care that your wireless was open? No, they don't. And let's say, for example, that a truly federal level crime was traced to your IP. Do you think the Feds are going to say "Oh, that's OK, your router was open. Just wasn't your fault!" and give you a hug? Kind of doubt it.

Frankly, IMHO, anyone who leaves their wireless open to the masses is an idiot. If I come across a client with unsecured wifi I explain a few things to them, namely lawsuits, and then lock it down. No one has argued with me. Maybe years ago it was considered cool & hip to share what you have with others who don't; but today it's just a liability.

Oh, who said this guy was running W7? If memory serves one can make shared under XP (or damn near any OS I think) that don't require passwords. Honestly, some of you are making this way too complicated.
