Super-Soft Toilet Paper Flushing Canada’s Boreal Forest Down the Toilet

This is not at all technology related story, although an important topic to cover. While we are targeting Third World countries for clear cutting forests, Canada is doing the same all for the comfort of soft toilet paper. I suppose you could say they really do give a crap, but not for their forests.

Quote:
And the ancient trees, some hundreds of years old , are being cleared for the production of disposable paper that is used for the messiest of jobs, says Bennett. Greenpeace, which has led a campaign to drastically reduce toilet-paper usage, says that if every household in Canada replaced one roll of regular tissue with 100 per cent recycled paper, 47,962 trees could be saved.

"Fushing" that's a neat new word.

I love soft toilet paper, it sure catches all those nasty Klingons that circle Uranus

I can't stand soft toilet paper. It just doesn't clean as well IMO. I buy the same kind of tp you find in most public bathrooms. It just works so much better.

That said, fuck greenpeace and everything they stand for. For every tree they try to save, I'm gonna burn 2 just to spite them. Same with the assholes at PETA. I'll eat twice as much meat just to piss them off. I wish these idiotic extremist groups would realize they are doing more harm than good by pissing off people who are just trying to enjoy life and everything this planet has to offer. Sorry, but humans can't significantly harm the earth in any meaningful matter. The earth will still be around and thriving long after the human species is extinct.

Greenpeace and those groups take things to far... but your attitude sucks (in addition to being wrong) as well. But whatever makes you feel better about being a wasteful person.

that is why, in this thrid world country,
we use water instead of toilet paper.
Altough I don't think thrid world country recycle the water, at least every house has a septic tank, where all the toilet busines goes too and bacteria will do its jobs.
Talking about saving the forest.
I think most developed country use most the paper produced, and plywood for building houses, coz here we still write on stone and have concrete shack

I am sure theres 2 sides to the story here. I live in British Columbia and work in the forest industry. Theres rules about cutting trees, you have to pay a stumpage fee to the government and they hire people to re plant trees. Tree planters. Renewable resource and all that stuff. So while they are cutting trees down they are replanting em back so whats the big deal anyhow?

So while other places might clear cut and leave it, your not allowed to do that in Canada.

I think green peace goes to far some times. Canada has alot of trees here. some are old some arn't While green peace is crying about TP, where do they get the paper they use to write on from? Pulp Mills. And the houses they live in made from wood as well.

That just ticks me off a tad is all. we replant what we cut down

They are talking about the boreal forests way up north. I'm assuming these trees grow alot slower due to harsh conditions.

[QUOT]]47,962 trees could be saved.[/QUOTE]

Really?!?! A whole 47,962 trees? I'm sure that'll have a huge impact on Canada's 3,000,000 square km of Boreal forests.

Here's some perspective.

According to the government, the province of Ontario has 85 billion trees over 71.3M hectares, that's about 1/4 of Canada's boreal forests.

That would make 47,962 trees a grand total of 0.00001411% of Canada's forests.

Oh god, at this rate we'll be out of trees in no time!

No, it's all replanted. Canada simply only harvests <1% of the Boreal forests every year.

Let's put this in perspective.

Canada's Boreal forests cover as much area as the entirety of the continental US.

It's a lot of trees.

Hm, so it doesn't matter what mans does, because even if we make the planet uninhabitable for humans, the planet itself will still exist. That's some mighty profound thinkin'.

I wasn't implying that they weren't replanted, just that the trees grow slower (which really makes no difference when talking about sub 50k trees). IMO Canada has some of the most harmless logging standards in the world. I'm not worried about Greenpeace and their perspectives

I have to agree. It didn't look like they were cutting down a bunch of redwoods or a rainforests (which typically don't grow back). They looked fairly young trees. Now I don't know how these trees those grow up there, but certainly in many parts of North America, you can replant pines and they'll grow fairly fast.
